Hearing from God! let's hear those stories

I was on a 6 day water fast over the winter. On sat (6day) God revealed to me that social media had been stunting my growth in Christ, and if I wanted to grow in Christ, I needed to let go of it. So, I started immediately! So grateful for God letting me know this. ! Praise Jesus! So thankful! It gets better.

God also revealed to me (laid on my heart), he wanted me to sit through both services on Sunday!! At first, I was excited because I knew all this was coming from God, but then after a while the thought of sitting through 2 service sorted of taunted me. I get to church,,,, and message was:" what is keeping you from getting closer to God "!! now just so you know, my pastor does not do mini-series!!! no one knows what he is going to preach on from one week to the next, But I can tell you I was so eager and pleased to sit for the second service, I was popping with joy!! I could see God working through my pastor! We serve such an amazing God!! Two services went by in a twinkle of an eye!! It gets better. To me this is a such a strong confirmation from God, to me that is was him who laid on my heart about getting closer to him.

On sat I had finished a life changing book , and now that I was off social media, I asked what book I should read, now that I have all this spare time. I was really wondering. So, I asked him. ( ps I do spend a lot of time in the word) But never really thought I got an answer, until Sunday, when I went up for the prayer at the end, and the elder gave me a book to read !! On Matthew !! Praise God! I never mentioned I was looking for a book to read.

I bring up this being a confirmation because, sometimes I think we all think we may have heard from God but not 100% sure. Especially early in our walk. I am 60 yrs old and really just now learning to listen to him, hear him. I know for certain if we have to many distractions, we will never hear from him. What I have found is he usually brings conviction or peace to my heart when I hear from him. And I would like to say, I have never heard a audible voice of God,

IT is worth mentioning about what I have learned about knowing you are hearing from him or not. One thing is, if it does not line up with the word, you're not hearing from him. Its your flesh or the enemy. Example I heard a pastor who is married telling a story of a women who came up to him and said God told me I was going to marry you, obviously God did not speak to this woman. This is why its critical to know Gods word he gave us for such attacks. We know the enemy knows Gods word and twist scripture to try to get us to sin, but we see Jesus who fights the enemy with correct scripture!

I would like also to make sure something is known about my 6day fast that God got my through. Never have I been I able to do a 6 day water fast, I have tried but always failed, I was relying on my will power instead of relying on God, this 6 day was very very peaceful (even though my dogs life was not certain) and got me closer to God then ever!! The reason I was doing a 6 day water fast was for my dog, who was being operated on for a life threating injury, 14 days total no food (that's how long my dog was in the hospital) , and teams of people praying, my Dog recovered and is as vibrant as ever Praise God he answers prayers!! I live alone no kids never married, so my dog is my family.

I share all this as a extension of Brads recent thread on how sad it is people do not hear from God! I share this story to encourage people to slow down and seek God, he is still talking with us. I know for me, I have struggled most of my life to hear from him, as I have far too many distractions.

would love to hear others tell their story when they heard from God, I know over the years on this site I have heard some magnificent stories!

Dave, I am 76 years old, and I am certain I started hearing from God from at least age 7 on up. At age 7 I was at church camp in Beulah Beach, Ohio, sitting on the hard benches in what was called "the tabernacle" which was a covered outdoor building. And I was listening to the preacher preach and give an invitation to repent of my sins and to believe in Jesus Christ, and to obey him. And I did cry out to God in repentance with a strong desire to obey him from that moment forward. But I had seen fake Christianity, and I wanted the real thing.

And my next big moment was (in my 20's) when I switched from reading the KJV to reading the NASB, which had just come out, and all of a sudden God's word was so clear to me (I have a reading comprehension difficulty so KJV was hard for me to understand). And God really began speaking to me in my spirit and leading me in what to do and to say, and I obeyed him.

And fast forward, back in 2004 I got possession of my grandmother's journals (she died when I was 2), and when I began reading her journals I wept. I was so much like her in so many ways. I was not like most people in my family, but she and I heard from the Lord in the same ways, and we even used the same phrases, and had the same favorite verses. But she kept quoting this one thing (no reference) over and over, so I finally looked it up. It was from Habakkuk 2:2-3:

"Then the Lord replied, 'Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.'"

This showed up several times from more than one source over a span of several weeks, I think. And then I was at a church workers conference, and the Lord was speaking to my heart through all the speakers, one by one. And one of them taught on Habakkuk 2:2-3. But the Lord was speaking directly to my heart through all that was being taught at this conference:

This is a summary of what I learned:

Preach the Word of God, not the teachings of man
Listen to God, hear what he is saying, and then obey him
Tell the people what God tells you to tell them and leave the results in his hands
What you are going to do, do it NOW
You were appointed by God as a herald and a teacher of true faith
God has given you a clear sense of his purpose for you and an urgency…
Fan into flame the gift(s) of God within you
Give your ministry over to God – it is not yours; it is his
God may have something else for you to do that you have not even thought of
Write down what God shows you and then wait on him to bring it about
Don’t ask God “why,” just trust him – stand firm, press on
What you are going through is much bigger than you can imagine
NOW is your time! – For such a time as this I was placed upon the earth…
Be a tree climber and get a closer look at the Supremacy of Jesus Christ
The Church is in crisis – the crisis of Supremacy
It is indistinguishable between the lives of evangelical Christians and the world
We need to get back to the basics – we need to put our focus on Jesus and the cross of Christ instead of on the teachings of man

A few months later the Lord began opening my mind and heart to so many things I did not know, and he definitely used the Habakkuk passage of Scripture to call me to this ministry of writing down what I learn from him each day in my times with him in his word and to then post these writings on the internet and a herald (the internet) would "run with it" (the title of my blog). And so that is what I have been doing faithfully ever since then. So nearly 22 years I have been writing what the Lord teaches me and I have been posting these writings on the internet, and God is taking these writings to people all over the world. And this is not anything that I would have ever imagined that the Lord would be having me do with my life. So I hear from him every day, some days more strongly (powerfully) than others. And I believe he led me to read your post and to respond. Sue Love

Dave, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful words of encouragement. All glory to God! I am glad this encouraged you. I do believe God led me to your post and to writing the response that he gave me. Thank you for reading some of what the Lord gives me to write. Much appreciated. I try to read some of your posts, too, and to respond to those as the Lord leads. I am encouraged by a lot of what you write, too. So, thank you.

Being in the construction industry most of my life, there was a time when the economy took a downturn. I was laid off from the company I was working for, so I went home. I would usually go directly to the unemployment office to sign up for benefits. This time I did not do that, so I let a couple of days go by, and then my wife said, “Curtis, you'd better get down to the unemployment office and sign up”. I thought nay, I did not feel like I should, so I waited for the next day, and then I went.

When I got there, the line went out the door, I was not happy. The DMV and unemployment office is a nightmare, no matter what time you go. I got in line, and I noticed a very tall lady about 5 people in front of me in line, and she was wearing a very short mini skirt with net stockings. She had long blond hair, and when she turned around to see how long the line had gotten behind her. When I saw her face, I could tell this lady had a very hard life, and it looked like she had a very hard night.

The Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “ I want you to go, and tell her about me”, I thought to myself, “I am not getting out of this line to talk to any body” Then I thought, “maybe I should do what the Lord is telling me to do”, so I made a deal with the Lord, I said, “ this is what I will do, I will stay in line, and when I am done, if that lady is still around I will talk to her about you” I was really hoping she would be gone out the door by then. The Lord did not say anything, so I figured we had a deal.

After I finished my business, I looked around in the building and outside and did not see this lady anywhere. I thought, “oh well”, and started heading back to my car. As I got to the street, I saw a car parked next to the curb with the passenger door wide open. I looked inside and there was this lady. She was lying down in the front seat with her legs sticking out the door. I guess she had nowhere to go. I tapped on the roof of her car, and I said, “Excuse me, ma'am, but I think the Lord wants me to talk to you.” She sat up immediately, and tears began to roll down her face. I thought, “Oops, I guess that was not the Lord talking to me.” As I started to leave, she said to me, “Wait..wait..and she started telling me about the night before. She said, “ I was in a motel room, and I was very depressed. I was clicking through the TV channels with the remote, and I came across a preacher on TV. The preacher said Jesus loves you,” then this lady said to herself if Jesus really loves me, then send someone to me and tell me about you.”
That was the night before. I was shocked and surprised at her telling me this. So I opened my mouth and began to tell her about Jesus and how to get saved. I prayed with her to receive Jesus into her heart. Then I asked her, “Do you have a Bible?” She said no. I said, “ I think I have one in my car you can have. I'll be right back”. I found a Bible in my back seat, but what I did not know was that the night before, a cat got into my car and peed all over this Bible, and it smelled really bad. I went back, and gave it to her, and told her I am so sorry for the smell, but it's the only Bible I have with me. She smiled, and I noticed her face had changed completely from 20 minutes earlier. The glory of God was shining through her. She left, I left rejoicing, knowing that if I had gone to the unemployment office one day sooner, this would never have happened. Thank you, Jesus, for such a blessing.
