“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.” (Romans 13:1-2 NASB1995)
I have a long medical history of fitting into that 4% rare category which does not follow the natural rule of law in medicine. The Lord took me off all medications 17 years ago because he doesn’t want me relying on drugs for my solutions, but also because I tended to have those kind of “rare” reactions to drugs which doctors don’t usually warn you about and which they may not accept as truth when they do happen, because they don’t follow the natural rule of law in medicine for how things are supposed to go.
And I am being faced with some challenges in this area presently as the Lord has allowed me to have some kind of sudden attack on my lung, my heart, my chest, my brain, and my digestive system, all of which are causing me much pain and discomfort. I have a good doctor who is willing to go with the exemptions to the rules, and to get me some tests done to try to find out the source of it all. But the specialists, so far, are not quite that bending, for they have their own fixed ways of how things should work in their minds.
So I am having to do a lot of my own research and discovery to help find those exceptions, i.e. those oddities that don’t seem to fit in with the norm, because they are more rare in occurrence. But all this that I am pursuing is under the guidance and the direction of the Holy Spirit, prayerfully, diligently seeking to follow the leading of the Lord and not my own way of thinking. And I am uncovering some very valid exemptions to the rule, and my doctor has been willing so far to pursue these with me to find the correct answers.
Now, must we as followers of Christ obey the commands of our Lord? Absolutely! There is no wiggle room out of obeying his moral laws. As his followers we are to live holy lives, pleasing to God, and we must not be conformed to the ways of this sinful world. But we must crucify the flesh with its sinful desires, by the Spirit, and we must walk in obedience to our Lord’s commands in holy living, all in the power of God at work within us. And we must follow our Lord wherever he leads us, in accord with his will.
However, when it comes to obeying our government authorities, there are biblical exceptions to that rule. We must obey them except when they command us to do what is contrary to the will of God and to the teachings of the Scriptures on how we are to live as followers of Christ. We are never to obey sin – no lying, no stealing, no bearing false witness, no compromise of biblical truth, no bowing to idols, and no diluting of the gospel message so as not to offend people who choose to not accept the gospel message.
And we have biblical examples of this resisting of government authorities in the lives of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego, the apostles Paul, Peter, and John, the deacon Stephen, and Jesus himself, et al. There were times when they had to say “no” to government authorities in order to obey God. And they set the example for us in how we need to obey God always and above other humans, no matter who they are, if what they are requiring of us is contrary to the will of God and it would lead us to sin against our Lord.
But, other than that, we are not to be rebels who decide that we are a law unto ourselves and that we can do whatever we want regardless of what the law says. And there are professing Christians who are doing that to God. For they have convinced themselves that obedience to God is not required of them and that their “faith” in Jesus and God’s grace has so covered their sins that they can keep sinning and still go to heaven when they die. But God himself, and the Scriptures, both refute that lie which comes from the devil.
For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

As the Deer
By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1
As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
