Help me understand the meaning of your commandments, and I will meditate on your wonderful deeds. I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word. Keep me from lying to myself; give me the privilege of knowing your instructions. I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by your regulations. Psalm 119:27-30 NLT
The longing to know God can only be fulfilled by starting with His Word. And not just through some kind of formal study but by living out what He helps us to grasp. That’s why it’s so critical that we rely on Him as we dig into the sacred writings, remembering that it’s a privilege to have His Word. His commandments are life-giving wisdom for those who commit themselves to following them.
Of course, Christians are not “under” the Law. We don’t earn righteousness from it. The writer of Psalm 119 understood what Paul said of the scripture: “The law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good” (Romans 7:12). Paul also made it clear that the Law of God is a “spiritual” thing, while we by definition are “of flesh” (Romans 7:14), so that when we combine the two, we will need the Helper, the Holy Spirit, to understand and apply what we read.
Prayer: O Lord, You alone have the words of eternal life. Help me to embrace Your Word with my whole heart!
