And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. ... And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. The first key verse above is frequently cited to say the normal Christian life consists of four things. Those four things are (1) apostolic teaching, (2) fellowship together as brothers and sisters in Christ, (3) the breaking of bread (also called the Lord’s Supper, Communion, and the Eucharist), and (4) prayer.
The other two key verses above say the normal Christian life consists of five more things. Those five more “day by day” things are (5) gladness, (6) generosity, (7) praising God, (8) having favor with all the people, and (9) adding new Christians to their number “day by day.”
Few churches, let alone individual men, consistently incorporate all nine things into their lives. That’s okay. There’s no need for guilt or shame. Just the opposite. Select one thing you would like to add to your life for a few weeks. If it adds (5) gladness, all the better!
Prayer: Lord, You know what I’d like to add to my life. May it also add gladness!
