Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. Keep my statutes and do them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you. Leviticus 20:7-8 ESV
In today’s verse, we are called to be holy, but that’s impossible, right?
Holiness is God’s natural state. He is perfect in His nature, as set apart from sin as light is from darkness. When God calls us to holiness, He isn’t meaning that we can achieve His level of perfection, but that we are to set ourselves apart—to consecrate ourselves—and live for Him by keeping His laws. Namely, we are to love God above all things and love our neighbor as ourselves.
Before we abandon the effort as hopeless (we’re just going to mess up again, so why try?), God says we aren’t the only ones responsible for our holiness. Even as we consecrate ourselves, God sanctifies us for His use. We can reach His level of holiness because He gives it to us when we work toward honoring Him with our actions and attitudes.
Yes, holiness is an impossible standard to achieve, but that’s no problem for God. Today, consecrate yourself and be holy. Look for opportunities to love God and others. Show the world God’s holiness in action, not that it comes from you, but that it comes through you from God Himself.
Prayer: Lord God, set me aside to do Your will today. May others see who I belong to because You will shine through.
