Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they said, "What [is that] to us? You see [to it]!" Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. Matthew 27:3-5 NKJV

Judas had a lot to be remorseful about. He sold out the sinless Son of God for thirty pieces of silver. Judas didn’t need the money. If he really wanted money, he could have simply taken what the other disciples had entrusted to him and slipped away. Instead, he betrayed his master to the religious authorities, and Jesus was sentenced to death. Of course Judas felt bad!

There are two ways to react to remorse. Judas chose to punish himself. The other option was to repent—to admit he had done wrong, to apologize for his actions, to make restitution to those affected, and to live as a change man. Between remorse and repentance, Judas took the easy way out.

When you do wrong, do you beat yourself up, or do you confess your shortcomings and try to make things right? Don’t take the easy way out. Allow God to show the world just how great His grace and love are.

Prayer: Jesus, turn my remorse into repentance so that I may enjoy a right relationship with You.
