Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? ... And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will dwell in them And walk among [them]. I will be their God, And they shall be My people." 2 Corinthians 6:14,16 NKJV

In celebrating the wisdom that comes from God’s Word, the psalmist wrote, “He has done this for no other nation” (Psalm 147:20).

Because the world doesn’t value the wisdom of God, Paul warns against going into business or developing close relationships with unbelievers. There is a significant difference between those who are the “temple of the living God” and those who worship at the temples of consumption, hedonism, and distraction.

Far too many men have thought they could make such relationships work, only to discover the same pain and powerlessness Isaiah’s audience expressed when they had gone into business and developed interdependencies with unbelievers: “See what has happened to those we relied on?” (Isaiah 20:6).

If you have already established a partnership with someone who doesn’t share the same convictions you do, you don’t necessarily need to sever it. Instead, you can work toward removing any arrangements that “yoke” you to the other party, arrangements like contracts and agreements that create financial dependency. Although believers won’t always treat you better than unbelievers, you are better off following the Holy Spirit’s counsel in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians.

Prayer: Father help me carefully unyoke myself from unbelievers and enjoy the more secure fellowship of those who follow You.
