Jesus gave us a “new” commandment in John 13:34; “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”
Some may not understand why Jesus said it was a “new” commandment; as it was also written in the Old Testament that we are to love our neighbor. But the key to understanding what Jesus meant by it being “new,” is when Jesus said to love one another “as I have loved you.”
So how can we love as Jesus loved us? It is only accomplished by “the love of God” being shed abroad “in our hearts” by way of the Holy Ghost which is given unto us as a gift.
Jesus said in John 17:26; “And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that “the love” wherewith thou hast loved me may be “in them”, and “I in them.” And so that is how we can love, as He loved us; and thereby we also have the love of God dwelling “in” us. The Old Testament was written on stone and paper, but the New Testament is written inwardly on our hearts and minds by the Spirit of the Living God.
Romans 5:5 “And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given to us.
