Abraham and Jesus, Together?

Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad." So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am." So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple. John 8:56-59 ESV

When the Lord walks in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve, when He instructs Noah how to build an ark, and when He invites Abraham to look at the sky, most readers have a hard time “seeing” the Lord. It’s because they don’t see Jesus.

Yes, Jesus visited planet Earth many times before His incarnation. Granted, Abraham didn’t think of Him as “Jesus.” But he still saw Him! What’s more, Jesus talked at length with Abraham about his “seed.” He spoke of many descendants. He also spoke of “seed” singular—referring to Himself (Galatians 3:16).

In today’s key verses, Jesus says Abraham responded to all this by rejoicing. That’s the exact opposite response of the religious leaders. They understand Jesus, in saying “I am,” to be claiming He’s God’s Son, the Lord incarnate. They are correct. But unlike Abraham, they doubt, and their evil, wicked, unbelieving hearts see red.

Were Abraham and Jesus ever together? You can believe it.

Prayer: Unchanging Lord, I believe every word Jesus said. Help me overcome my unbelief.

So, who was the 3rd man in Genesis 18? Abraham addressed him my Lord (v3) and the author calls him 'the Lord' (v13). After the encounter two of the trio went on to rescue Lot and his daughters from the destruction of Sodom; who was that 3rd man?

Another possible instance is the time when Abraham's grandson Jacob wrestled with a man who blessed him saying, 'for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.' Genesis 32:18.

One other possible encounter was with the three recalcitrant Hebrew officials, Shadrack, Meshach and Abed-Nego. Maybe King Nebuchadnezzar's 4th man was our Lord Jesus? Daniel 3:25.

Are there any other instances of Jesus's Old Testament bit part appearances?

Dear Brother, @Andyindauk
You mean what some have called Christophanies.
Some might point to the meeting with Hagar as another Jesus appearance in the OT.

(7) Now the Angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, by the spring on the way to Shur. (13) Then she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, You-Are-the-God-Who-Sees; for she said, "Have I also here seen Him who sees me?" Genesis 16:7,13 NKJV

I'm sure there are others. Since I believe that any appearance by God in the OT was actually Jesus. Why? because of Colossians 1:15 Col 1:15 NKJV - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts brother!
God bless.

With the Love of Christ Jesus.

Hi Nick,

I think the most notable is the account of Melchizedek. This is the account as per Hebrews -

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,” without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. Hebrews 7:1‭-‬3 NKJV

He's described as a prototype Christ, but was the King of Salem not actually Jesus?

Dear Brother,
I'm sure one day we will know for a certainty on Melchizedek!
