His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. And he said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast." So they took it. John 2:5-8 ESV
Who wants to be told what to do at every turn? Well, in New Testament times, half of the Roman Empire’s population experienced just that. They did what they were told—or else!
Into this world Jesus came as a servant to all. The Son of God humbled Himself to the fullest extent possible. What a strange way for the Lord to come. Not only that, but—in scores of verses from Matthew 8 to John 18:36—Jesus explained that His disciples were to be servants too. They were to do whatever He told them to do.
In today’s New Testament Bible reading, right before Jesus starts His public ministry, He graciously acquiesces to His earthly mother’s wishes. Notice how the servants responded. They filled each large clay jar “to the brim.” Their wholehearted obedience was almost instantly rewarded.
Do you want to feel like a servant? If so, to whom and why?
Prayer: Unvarying Lord, yes, I want to be Your servant. I want to do what You say. Help me!
