But Peter denied it. "Woman," he said, "I don't even know him!" Luke 22:57 NLT

One of the few episodes that all four Gospels record is Peter’s three denials the night before Jesus’ crucifixion—in Matthew 26:69-75; Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:55-62, and John 18:16-27. But to whom did Peter deny the Lord? The four Gospel writers give differing accounts. Do their differences contradict each other?

Like any sports journalist, each Gospel writer had a specific purpose for writing his account. He had a specific audience in mind. By definition he had to leave out most of what he knew (o9therwise, he never would have finished writing!). Leaving out secondary and tertiary details isn’t wrong—it’s what every good writer does.

Actually, their differences don’t contradict; they complement each other.

So to whom did Peter deny Jesus Christ? Any good sports journalist can harmonize the four Gospel accounts fairly easily.
  • First denial: one maid who talked to a second maid about Peter
  • Second denial: the two maids plus others who confronted Peter
  • Third denial: a larger group of bystanders, including a servant who was upset with Peter
Bottom line: Over the years, critics have cited Peter’s three denials as the “ultimate proof” that the Bible contains errors. Their adamant remarks, however, haven’t proven anything.

Prayer: Yes immutable Lord, I want to say “Thank You!” that professional sports reporting helps me quickly and easily resolve differing accounts within the Gospels.

Like an accident scene report, the police can get varying details of the account of the accident, some leaving out some details in how they present what they have seen while others give more details than what the other have reported, but when put altogether, the police's report will have a general account of what had happened at the scene of the accident as the truth.
