I spoke to you in your [times of] prosperity, but you said, I will not listen! This has been your attitude from your youth; you have not obeyed My voice. Jeremiah 22:21 AMPC
The prosperous often believe they don’t need God. They can meet all their own needs and many of their wants, so obedience to God isn’t high on their priority list. While this isn’t always the case, it certainly was in today’s passage regarding God’s people. God spoke, but they disobeyed, and they’d been doing so since their youth.
Have you noticed this pattern in your own life regarding prosperity? When all the bills are paid and you’ve got extra money in your pocket, is your heart less sensitive to the Spirit’s leading, and do you tend to be less obedient to clear biblical principles?
What’s a believer supposed to do during times of prosperity? Pray for lack? Not at all! But maintaining a spirit of gratitude to God, given that He is the source of every good and perfect gift (as James 1:17 says), will go a long way toward keeping your humble and therefore, willing to obey God whether you are in seasons of plenty or want.
Prayer: Lord, may I always maintain a spirit of gratitude toward You. Indeed, You are the source of every good and perfect gift. Everything belongs to You. May I never lose sight of that.
