Moreover, you [Jeremiah] shall say to them, Thus says the Lord: Shall men fall and not rise up again? Shall one turn away [from God] and not repent and return [to Him]? Why then is this people of Jerusalem turned away with a perpetual turning away [from Me]? They hold fast to [a]deceit (idolatry); they refuse to repent and return [to God]. Jeremiah 8:4-5 AMPC

If you’ve ever been in an unfamiliar city or on an unfamiliar highway and been totally dependent on your GPS device, you know that it doesn’t always steer you n the right direction. New roads may not show up on your GPS. And it may insist that you take roads that no longer even exist. But once you finally figure out that you’re going in the wrong direction, you override the GPS and point your car in the right direction.

The people Jeremiah was writing to were indeed God’s people (see verse 8), but oddly, they routinely took the wrong road—spiritually speaking—then just kept going. The context suggests that their leaders were the GPS, leading them down the wrong road without any understanding that they needed to turn around.

Just because religious leader says something, it doesn’t mean it’s right. Verse 9 says, “Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; ”. If you’ve been sitting under teaching in a church for a long time that is moving away from the scriptures, it’s time to find a new fellowship right away.

Prayer: Lord, make me a Berean—someone who studies everything religious leaders say to make sure it lines up with Your Word.
