He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil, he will dwell on the heights; his place of defense will be the fortresses of rocks; his bread will be given him; his water will be sure. Isaiah 33:15-16 ESV
Galatians 5:19-21 says “the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
The antidote to those things is the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Want a good test to see if you are displaying the fruit of the Spirit? Examine today’s verses and ask yourself if you’re walking righteously, speaking uprightly, despising oppression, not hearing bloodshed, and not watching evil.
Not that you’ll do these things perfectly. But is this your heart’s desire? Do you long to shun the flesh and embrace all that is good and right? Confess your sin to God and begin the difficult work of putting your flesh to death by starving it of all it desires.
Prayer: Lord, I want to walk righteously, speak uprightly, despise oppressions, not listen to bloodshed or watch evil. Forgive me for sinning against You. Empower me to put my flesh to death.
