Can One Pray in the Spirit Without Speaking in Tongues?

Ref: reply #72

Hello @Admon Mikha'el,

Thank you for 'challenging' me on this blessed subject.

The fact of my being 'in Christ', by Whose will and by Whose hand, is made clear in verses which, like me, you probably know and love, in 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, I will simply quote the two which apply most to this question.

'But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus,
Who of God is made unto us
wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
That, according as it is written,
He that glorieth, let Him glory in the Lord.'
(1 Corinthians 1:30)

There was a time, when I thought being 'in Christ' depended on me: and I would fret and be anxious about whether I was 'in' or 'out' of Him. I had not then been enabled to 'acknowledge' the truth of the verses quoted above: but, 'Praise God', I now know and acknowledge that it is God Himself Who has placed me in Christ Jesus, my Lord and Head; by identifying me with Him in His death, in His burial, His quickening and His resurrection (Romans 6).

Yes, when God sees me, He sees His Son in all His perfection: Holy and without blame; therefore I am 'Accepted in the Beloved', made 'complete' in Christ, and made meet to partake of 'the inheritance of the saints in light'; and nothing shall separate me from the Love of God, in Him. This is my standing in Christ, which is sure: and I now walk before the Father in newness of life, but again, 'in Him', my flesh counts for nothing.

His workmanship - Praise His Holy Name!
With love in Christ Jesus
Chris

* Ephesians 1:3-14; Colossians 2:10; Colossians 1:12; Romans 8:35-39.
* What a lovely way to start my day. Thank you, Admon.

'The book of the generation of Jesus Christ,
the son of David,
the son of Abraham.'
(Mat 1:1)

Hello @Admon Mikha'el,

Christ (Gr. Christos) means 'anointed' (ie., the anointed one), the Messiah. This is the translation of the Hebrew 'Mashiah'.
The combination of the words 'Jesus Christ' means 'Jesus the Messiah', whereas 'Christ Jesus' denotes the now exalted One, Who once humbled Himself. 'Christ the Lord' - this is the Hebrew 'Mashiah Jehovah' = 'Jehovah's anointed', occurring in Luke 2:11:- 'For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord:' and with the Article = 'The Anointed of Jehovah' (Luke 2:26):- 'And it was revealed unto him (Simeon) by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ.'

When considering the believer being 'in Christ Jesus', then it is the risen Lord, now risen and glorified that is being referred to, Who is at God's right hand in the heavenlies. God reckons us to have died with Christ, been buried, quickened to life and raised with Him, and ascended with Him to God's right and. He is our hope, for our life is hid with Christ in God: and when He 'appears' in glory then we will appear with Him there.

How wonderful that is, isn't it? To be identified so closely with Christ in God's sight.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

And where is that in scripture??
There is a difference in praying in the spirit and praying in tongues.

As we know, not every Christian speaks in tongues. Yet most all Christians pray, and also pray in the spirit.

With that in mind, we may remember Paul knew this.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:18

If we can only pray in tongues when praying in the spirit, when not all Christians speak in tongues, we could not be guided by Paul's teaching.

God always see's you. And knows your innermost thoughts.

Acts 8:13 And Simon himself also believed: and being baptized, he continued with Philip; and beholding signs done and great miracles, he was amazed.
8:14 Now when the apostles, those at Jerusalem, heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
8:15 who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they receive the Holy Spirit:
8:16 for as yet He was fallen upon none of them: only they had been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

What sign did Jesus promise would be evident for disciples who believed the full gospel?
What evidence accompanied those who received the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts?

1 Corinthians 12
1Cor 1:2 to the church of *God which is at Corinth, those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called saints, with all that call in every place upon the name of our *Lord Jesus Christ, theirs and ours:
the epistle to the Corinthian church is written to disciples/believers of the gospel who in accordance with Acts have been baptized in water and the Holy Spirit with the sign of speaking in tongues.
so there are no scriptures in 1Corinthians that uphold the notion that Christians in the first church did not speak in tongues.

do not confuse the operation of the voice gifts given to the Spirit-filled church for use at meetings (when the church comes together) with the evidence given for every true worshipper.
In the book of Acts god clearly teaches us all that praying in tongues is the sign, the evidence, of being baptized in the Holy Spirit.

1Cor 14:26 What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be unto edifying.
14:27 If any speaketh in a tongue, let it be by two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret:
14:28 but if there be no interpreter, let him be silent in church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
14:29 And let prophets speak by two or three, and let the others discern.

This is what we do at our worship services - the gift of tongues followed by the gift of interpretation and then up to three gifts of prophecy.
All done decently and in order.
This is 1Corinthians 12 in action - the gifts distributed to the church - along with healings, faith, miracles, discerning of spirits, wisdom and knowledge.

Not every Spirit-filled believer will have the gift of speaking in tongues, but every Spirit-filled believer will pray in the Spirit.

And those that have will remember it.

Praying in the spirit can be experienced in many ways, for many saved souls, it will dependant upon a persons faith and the situations they are experiencing and giving to the Lord, especially when we let go of those issues and really do give tham fo God through Jesus. It can also be experienced when nothing in this world is in us, when we seek the face of God, but as always when we submit in faith.

Praying in the Spirit, and sharing our experiences could be an interesting topic in itself. ;)

1 Corinthians 12:30 Not all have gifts of healing, do they? Not all speak in tongues, do they? Not all interpret, do they?31 But you should be eager for the greater gifts.

No thing so shameful as when those who profess they know the Christ daring in their hubris to judge who are worthy of his name.
Playing God, who knows his own, is a very dangerous thing.
And God is watching.

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all that heard the word.
10:45 And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, who came with Peter, because that on the nations also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.
10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

Act 19:5 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
19:6 And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that have believed: in my name shall they cast out demons, speak with tongues; [Jesus]

I see that you have received a lot of answers that are not based in accurate knowledge or understanding of Scripture. From a studied point of view, according to what Paul and Jude teach, the answer to that question would be no - the terms "praying in tongues" and "praying in the Spirit" mean the exact same thing, they do NOT mean two different things.

Blessings!

1Co_14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
