They rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their ancestors, and they despised all his warnings. They worshiped worthless idols, so they became worthless themselves. They followed the example of the nations around them, disobeying the LORD's command not to imitate them. 2 Kings 17:15 NLT
Consider what you have done in the past twenty-four hours. What stands out to you? Could you list a few things from the past week as well? What you do will shape you in one way or another. The more you immerse yourself in spiritual practices and in the study of scripture, the more those things will shape you. The more you immerse yourself in the values of our culture, the more they will direct and influence you.
God’s desire for His people is to guide them toward His rest, peace, and justice—often described by the word shalom. Yet, by making more time for other priorities and influences, God’s hope for His people can be lost, if not drowned out. One act of disobedience or one choice to follow your own plan may seem small in isolation, but accumulated over time, the consequences can be fire, shaping you and leading you in ways you may have never imagined.
There is hope for you as one of God’s people, but enjoying that hope and the peace that comes with it depends on faithfulness to the path God has set before you.
Prayer: Lord, grant me the wisdom to follow Your commandments and to remain attentive to You.
