Jesus called people (mostly the Pharisees) Hypocrites in over a dozen verses.
Matt 6:2; "So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
Matt 6:5; "When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
Matt 6:16; "Whenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, for they neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed by men when they are fasting. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.
Matt 15:7; "You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you:
Matt 22:18; But Jesus perceived their malice, and said, "Why are you testing Me, you hypocrites?
Matt 23:13; "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut off the kingdom of heaven from people; for you do not enter in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.
Matt 23:14; ["Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive greater condemnation.]
Matt 23:15; "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
Matt 23:23; "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.
Matt 23:25; "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.
Matt 23:27; "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.
Matt 23:29; "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous,
Matt 24:51; and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Mark 7:6; And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
Luke 12:56; "You hypocrites! You know how to analyze the appearance of the earth and the sky, but why do you not analyze this present time?
Luke 13:15; But the Lord answered him and said, "You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him?
So what is a hypocrite? It's saying one thing, and doing another thing. It's wearing a mask.
In the verses above Jesus told the Pharisees, you look like this, but you're really like that.
You act like this, but you're really that. You say this, but you do that.
In Matt 23:14; told the Pharisees that they devour what widows have (very little) and then pretend to be religious by making long prayers.
He said they'll receive a "greater condemnation" because they do this.
I once saw a bumper sticker.. it said "Jesus save me... from your followers". At first I was a little offended by it... but to tell the truth, I get it. I know where he is coming from.
Rom 2:24; For "THE NAME OF GOD IS BLASPHEMED AMONG THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF YOU," just as it is written.
People laugh at Jesus/God because of the way some Christians act. I've seen people with the little Christian fish on the back of their cars flipping people off while zooming down the highway.
We say we are one thing, but then we act like another. Some Christians are just as much hypocrites as the Pharisees were.
When David had an affair with Bathsheba, God didn't punish David for having the affair. He punished David because now people had a reason to blaspheme God.
2Sam 12:13; Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die.
2Sam 12:14; "However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die."
How man of us claim to be Christians, but live and act just like everyone else. The world is laughing at you.
But Jesus isn't laughing. If you claim to be a follower of Jesus and you're the worst sinner of all the people you know. Jesus knows who you are.
