Is it possible to be saved and not be a disciple of Jesus?
Jesus talks about the great cost of discipleship which requires taking up our cross, denying ourselves, and following Him.
"Then Jesus said to his disciples, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."
-Matthew 16:24
We are also aware of another passage in which Jesus talks about salvation.
"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand."
-John 10-27:28
Are theses parallel passages which tell us that salvation and discipleship are the same thing,
or is discipleship different from salvation in the sense that you can have one and not the other?
I'm aware that being saved is different from the rewards we receive in heaven. All of God's children are saved (the parable of the sheeps vs the goats),
however all of God's children will not get the same amount of rewards (the parable of the talents). Are rewards a matter of how much of a disciple
we are, and salvation a matter of faith and repentance. Or are these two things salvation and discipleship two sides of the same coin?
What are your thoughts?
