Here in the US, there is a lot of talk about slavery in America that happened over a century ago. Amazingly there is very said about the sex-slave trade here in the US.
This thread isn't about those kinds of slavery, at least not directly. We shouldn't be slaves to men, but we shouldn't be slaves to sin either. Being a slave to man won't keep
you out of the kingdom of God, being a slave to sin on the other hand...
Jesus came to set us free. Free from what?
John 8:31; So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;
John 8:32; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
John 8:33; They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free'?"
John 8:34; Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
John 8:35; "The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
John 8:36; "So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
Jesus came to set us free from the bondage of sin. Yes, He sets us free from the penalty of sin as well (if we repent) but we do not have to be slaves to sin.
Paul talks about slavery to sin as well.
Rom 6:16; Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?
Rom 6:17; But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,
Rom 6:18; and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
Rom 6:22; But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life.
Before we were Christians, we were slaves to our desires and lusts.
Tit 3:3; For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.
Peter says we can go back to slavery if we choose to.
2Pet 2:18; For speaking out arrogant words of vanity they entice by fleshly desires, by sensuality, those who barely escape from the ones who live in error,
2Pet 2:19; promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.
2Pet 2:20; For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
How are you doing today? Has Jesus truly set you free? Are you free indeed?
