Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-25 NLT

By God’s grace you have been saved and adopted into His family. There isn’t anything you can do to merit God’s mercy or to earn God’s love. Having said all of that, Paul makes it abundantly clear that you can lose your grasp of God’s presence, become distracted, or pursue something other than God’s will. Jesus’ parable of the seeds and the four types of soil say as much.

The solution to receiving God’s grace and mercy is the discipline of an athlete, a commitment to training that aims for an eternal reward that will never fade away. While the disciplines of prayer, silence, study, or meditation may all appear difficult at first and challenging to incorporate into your day, they can grow easier over time.

Much like an athlete growing in strength and endurance, your ability to focus on God and to set aside time for God can grow and improve over time.

Prayer: Jesus, give me the gifts of patience and endurance as I seek You today so that I will not grow weary but will grow in Your grace.
