Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1 NIV
In today’s key verse, Paul calls believers to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice—as a true and proper act of worship. This is a reference to the old covenant sacrificial system.
Albert Barnes goes into more detail in his commentary: “In the case of an animal, it was slain, and the blood offered; in the case of any other offering, as the first-fruits, etc, it was set apart to the service of God; and he who offered it released all claim on it, and submitted it to God, to be disposed of at his will.”
Likewise, you are to release your claim on your life and offer it to God to be disposed of at His will. Consider your eating habits, your work, or how you handle money or spend your leisure time. Have you offered these up to the Lord to do with as He pleases? If not, this is the scriptural call on your life today.
Prayer: Lord, in today’s key verse, Paul is calling me to go all in with You. This is a radical countercultural way to live, but how can I do anything else? Indeed, how—given the sacrifice You’ve made for me?
