The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent." Exodus 14:14 ESV

In the midst of historic battles and future prophecies, and in wise sayings and heartfelt psalms, you’ll find moments of unexpected silence. One such moment occurs near the climax of the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt in today’s Old Testament scripture reading.

Shortly before the Lord’s judgment on His enemies, He often tells His people to stand still and stay perfectly quiet. It’s the proverbial calm before the storm of God’s fury. You see this here and in Amos 5:13, Habakkuk 2:20, and Zephaniah 1:7, as well as in Revelation 8:1, where it says that heaven itself is silent for half an hour.

Similarly, before the Lord’s salvation of His people, He often tells them to be silent. Psalm 62:1 (ESV) says: “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.” Lamentations 3:26 (ESV) affirms: “It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.” Isaiah 30:15 (ESV) adds: “For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, ‘In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.’”

So, what’s on your to-do list today?

Prayer: Lord, I’m a man of action. I’m not a man who likes to sit still and rest quietly for long periods of time. Right now, I’m going to wait on You.
