How Do I Put on the Armor of God?

Member
Love this post, thanks Chad. The armour of God is something I am working on as I do sometimes feel attacked and suffer anxiety attacks. I agree with your interpretation and was meditating on this passage from 2 Samuel 22:31 , David's Prayer of Deliverance:

"This God - His way is perfect;
The word of the LORD proves true;
He is a shield for those who take refuge in Him." (ESV)

I love these three lines. Firstly that his ways are perfect give me such a sense of trust even when things seem to be falling around us that even in his wrath or disciplining, you can trust that the moves and decisions he makes are right and perfect.

Secondly that the word of God and His promises prove true, what a great passage to remind us of the power of His Word and that we can rest in the knowledge that what we read in the Bible is true and will be proved true if you put it into practise. This relates to the sword of the spirit and belt of truth.

Finally, that He is our shield when we have faith in Him, rest in his steadfast love and put our hope in Him, the everlasting God, El Olam (Hebrew).

In my understanding of spiritual warfare, God ultimately is in total control and the armour of God, like prayer is our partnership with God, essentially doing our part in the battle. This makes sense as a way of God giving us the dignity to help in the fight and struggle as opposed to doing everything for us. This strengthens our knowledge and understanding of Him, deepens our relationship with Him and gives us a role to play in His creation.

Best,
Jonathan

Armor of God

The armor of God is described in Ephesians 6:10-18. In this passage we are told that our primary battles are of a spiritual nature and that we need spiritual armor to be able to stand firm in the midst of these battles. The armor includes the following pieces:

Belt of truth: The belt of truth is the first item in our arsenal. A belt holds the other pieces of clothing and armor together. It secures the outfit and allows a soldier to move freely. Truth both secures us and gives us freedom (John 8:32). One of Satan's greatest offensive tactics is to deceive us; he is the "father of lies" (John 8:44). With the belt of truth around our waists, we are prepared to defend against this. This truth also applies to the way we live our lives. When we live with honesty and integrity, the other pieces of our armor – what could be considered our spiritual selves – stay intact. A life of integrity is not easily torn asunder.

Breastplate of righteousness: The breastplate of righteousness covers our hearts and other vital organs. In a sense, the breastplate covers the most vulnerable areas of a warrior. Proverbs 4:23 says, "Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life." The righteousness that guards a believer's heart is the righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Shoes of Peace: Our feet are to be "fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace" (Ephesians 6:15 NIV). Because we know the good news of Christ and by that knowledge experience peace in Him (John 14:27), our feet are willing to move. In obedience to Christ, we will flee temptations (1 Corinthians 10:14; 1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22) and walk into whatever He has called us to (Psalm 86:11; Isaiah 30:21; John 15:10).

Shield of faith: The shield of faith is used to "extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one" (Ephesians 6:16). When Satan attacks us, our faith in Christ lessens the blow. We are able to withstand the attack because we know whom we have believed (2 Timothy 1:12).

Helmet of salvation: A helmet protects the brain, basically our minds. It is because of salvation that our minds can be sound. We are assured of our eternities, and made righteous recipients of peace, practitioners of faith, and knowers of truth. Our minds are protected because of Jesus' work on the cross; we have been given the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:12-16). A helmet can also serve as a signifier. When the enemy looks at us, he sees that we belong to Christ. We carry with us the seal of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14).

Sword of the Spirit: The sword of the Spirit is the Word of God. This includes God's written Word (the Bible), God's incarnate Word (Jesus as Logos), and God's spoken Word (the Holy Spirit within us). The sword is the one offensive weapon in the list. We are told, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart" (Hebrews 4:12). Second Timothy 3:16 (NIV) speaks of Scripture as being "God-breathed." When God spoke creation came into existence. He breathed life into man. There is power in the Word of God; this is why it is our best offense.

credit: What is the full armor of God?

None of these promotes a need for a continual infilling of the Holy Spirit because all that has been listed are the only armors necessary for putting on the armor of God; thus knowing and believing that Jesus Christ is in us and by being rooted in His words in all His promises to us, we can rest in Him that He will help us to follow Him by faith & trust in Jesus Christ as our Good Shepherd since He is in us and is with us always as greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world.

Knowing we are forever Spirit-filled is the knowledge and testimony from the Triune God in us that we had been saved at the calling of the gospel since we had first come to & believed in Jesus Christ..

Knowing & reminding ourselves of this truth is how one put on the whole armour of God because Christ Jesus is always in us and thereby equipped to deal with any spiritual battle that comes our way as He will deal with it

Amen! I was blessed with the shield of faith on a trip home from work one day. Jesus christened me with His Shield as I rode my motorcycle home. The shield glistened gold and glimmered brightly in the sun. This happened after consistent prayer asking for his protection (over the course of maybe three days) as I knew the battlefield that I was heading into everyday at home. It was a fight against Satan who was trying to persuade me to sin and not trust in the Lord, to doubt his promises and to doubt the Word. But I trusted and just stood still. Jesus finally won of course! And once He prevailed a confession was made by my wife and all the angels in heaven rejoiced!

God said "what I have freely given to you, freely give to them. Amen.

God also said "Do not muzzle the ox when it is treading the grain" ... "Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel".

The Armor of God
by member Romans 8.28

All of the pieces of the armor that God provides us with are associated with the word.

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.

1. Loins girt about with truth of the word. Psalms 119:114. "Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word." John 17:17. "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."

2. Breastplate of righteousness. Psalms 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. How does God do this? Through His word. Philippians 2:13 tells us, "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure," and again this will be through His word.

Ephesians 6:15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

Your feet being shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace is symbolic of our walk, and the gospel proclaims good tidings of those different things God is doing. How do you prepare? Through the word; you cannot run to tell the message without being prepared with the word. 1 Peter 3:15 says it like this: "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear."

Ephesians 6:16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Above all, taking the shield of faith. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Mark 4:40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? Well I would say to this that if I think I have no faith, what happened to the faith God has dealt

to every man? Is it merely weakened for a lack of exercising it? Romans 14:1. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. Dear hearts, Christ leads us into valleys as well as the mountaintops so that we may be tested. 1 Peter 1:7. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: Remember that we are God's workmanship; a jewel being prepared, and God may be bragging on you just as He did in Job 1:8, And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Do you think since you are saved by the blood of Christ and not by works of righteousness which you have done, that you are any less perfect than Job was? That was just the beginning of Job's testing and God perfected him as He is doing in you.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Take the helmet of salvation. Only through the word can you know the assurance of your salvation. It is there for all, but hard for many to ever realize; that takes that faith to believe God instead of ourselves accusing us. Even Job defended himself against his accusers, and God has laid aside every sin we have in the death of His Son. Romans 4:8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Philippians 3:9, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.

Ephesians 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. Oh the blessings we receive when we love our brethren as ourselves, and many times we can see our brother struggling and easily pray for them, but then forget to have that same integrity toward our own spiritual walk. Our faith weakens and we find ourselves in the far land feeding swine, and in want. Now we remain the son, and our Father never leaves or forsakes us, but we soon find ourselves in want. What to do about it? Run to our Father Who will run to meet us, put our ring back on our finger, the robe of righteousness, and slaughter the fatted calf to honor us. Faith? Hebrews 12:2. "Look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God." We cannot do it, but God can. Philippians 1:6 "Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ."

I do know what you mean as it pertains to your closing statement. However, once you get past the "advertisement" you do get some meat to grow by. I thank brother Chad for finding and posting this "freely".

Looking at Ephesians 6 -- we've been going through that in church these past several weeks. Truth -- girding your waste with truth which is the word of God. The Breastplate of righteousness. guarding your heart. Our feet -- spreading the Gospel of peace that we have through Jesus Christ and then the shield of faith - a shield protects us from the fiery darts of satan. And the helmet of salvation -- a helmet protects our head / our minds. The Sword of the spirit = the Word of God. A sword can damage the enemy And pierce our soul with conviction And Praying. Taking everything to God in prayer. That's how we build a relationship -- by talking to a person often -- that goes for God, too. :)

Yes, its basically what we were taught that 'he has equipped us to stand firm against the evil one through truth, righteousness, Peace, Faith, and Salvation in order to have spiritual victory over the enemy.'

For me, putting armor of God is believing and spreading his word to the community. I was once confused and no idea a single thing about religious beliefs, thanks to Lay Cistercians of South Florida, they help me where to begin and how to properly accept God.

@aryanmags123 -- does Scripture say That? So how does a person "properly accept God"? Take time to look up Ephesians 6

A believer is Supposed to be out sharing the Gospel with all who will listen.

Hi rag4acrown, A good idea is to read about the armour in Ephesians 6:10-18. you'll find each piece of armour has attributes The belt = Truth, The breastplate = Righteousness. Your feet = the Gospel of peace. the Shield = of Faith and the Helmet = Salvation. Find these attributes in a concordance check each attribute against the relevant scriptures and you'll end up with some understanding of each Item of your armour. But don't forget the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God because the armour is to protect us, whereas the Sword is an offensive weaopen. If your post was not because you wish to know this, because you already do, but to point out greedy teachers. Then forgive me for being presumptuous and bless you. Trevor
