Are We Listening?

God is constantly trying to speak to us, but the question is: Are we listening? The Bible says, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear.-Matthew 11:15. Remember in scripture when God spoke so naturally to the young boy Samuel one night that he thought it was the high priest Eli. God had to speak three times before it dawned on either Samuel or Eli that God was trying to speak audibly. Finally Eli told Samuel, "Go lie down; and it shall be, if He calls you that you must say, "Speak, for your servant hears."-1 Samuel 3:9. Notice that Samuel was to say that he was listening.

God talked to Adam and Eve face to face. God spoke from the thick darkness to Moses, telling him to go back to Egypt and lead the Israelites out of persecution. God spoke through angels to Abraham, saying, "Your ninety-year old wife is going to have a baby about this time next year. Some of you are thinking right now, OK, I believe God spoke to those biblical people, but He doesn't speak to me. Yes He does! He speaks to us in several ways, but I'm only going to mention two of them. The main way God speaks plainly and powerfully is through the Bible. God is trying to speak to you through His Word. Are you reading it? He expresses His will and His wisdom to each of us when we read His Word and listen for His voice.

Another way God speaks to us is through nature. God created nature and He controls nature. In the Book of Genesis, God spoke to Noah and called him to build an ark. The citizens laughed, criticizing this man of God and his message. Noah preached for 120 years without one convert, but he continued to build an ark for the salvation of his family. God's message to us through the flood: "I am the Judge of all the earth. You will answer to Me some day." God, and God alone controls what happens on this planet.

Throughout history God has used earthquakes to communicate to those who are hard of hearing. God used an earthquake at the Crucifixion to split the veil of the temple from the top to bottom, telling the world that His Son had died on the cross. This earthquake released people from their graves who walked into Jerusalem and were recognized by those who had attended their funerals. God used an earthquake at the Resurrection as an angel rolled the stone away, not to let Jesus out, but to let us in.

Are you in God's family? Do you have a relationship with Jesus? If you do, then God the Holy Spirit lives within your heart and you can hear His voice. Has God been using little "earthquakes" in your life to get your attention? Has He been saying to you, "I'm in control, not you." Has He already spoken to you three times about something He wants you to do?

Father, we know You are constantly trying to speak to us. May we recognize Your voice when You speak. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Love in Christ,
Jan :)

Once I made reading the bible a priority every morning my life has changed for ever now thank you God. He also as I am sure you know uses inner conviction to speak to us.

I agree 100%, but I have a question, whats your take when Jesus was in the boat and the sea and the wind kicked up and he commanded it to calm, did the devil send that? did God send that? was it just used to show the men in the boat a lesson in faith?

thanks

Brother Dave, I believe it was a lesson in faith. After everything the disciples had seen Jesus do; speaking over an illness and the person was healed, paralyzed legs could walk, blind eyes could see, casting out of evil spirits at His command. After seeing all these miracles, the disciples still were not sure Who Jesus was. They did not have faith that He was the Son of God. Jesus wanted faith from His disciples! I believe Jesus allowed the storm so the disciples could see for themselves that they did not yet have faith in Him.
