Matt 5:13; "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
Mark 9:50; "Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."

We are supposed to be salt and light. We are supposed to be example of Jesus and of righteousness to the world.
People are supposed to look at us "Christians" and see something different. Something not the same as the rest of the world.
We are supposed to live and act differently than the rest of the world. We are supposed to be salt. We are supposed to live in peace and love with each other.
Salted food doesn't taste the same as unsalted food. Christian lives aren't supposed to be the same as "un-Christian" lives.
Mark 9:49; is in a slightly different context, here are some other translations.

In ancient times before everything was refrigerated, salt was used to cure and purify meat.
This passage is saying we are (going to be) being purified. Fire also purifies, obviously heat purifies metals.
The fires and trials of life will purify us. Passing through these temptations and trials is what purifies us.
