What are good works that can be done at any time?

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. (James 1:22–2

reading this morning I thought you might get something out of this article @FrankDSegura

There are the works we "have" to do. There are are works we "don't" have to do. But there is no reason why we can't do good works any time we want to.
Things like giving to the poor, feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, taking care of widows, and helping old ladies across the street won't save us without Jesus.
But even so... there is no reason not to do these things. We have pushed the "no works, no works, no works" thing until it's almost a sin to do anything for God or the church.
The fact is.. it isn't a sin to do good works under any circumstances.

There is a verse that says we aren't saved by works (Eph 2:8-9; ).... OK that's great. There are a dozen more that say we better do good works "after" we are saved.
Why do go with the "one" scripture, and ignore the other twenty scriptures? It's before and after. No good works can save you (before you are saved).
Some good works are required (after you are saved).

Jas 2:14; What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?
Jas 2:15; If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,
Jas 2:16; and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?
Jas 2:17; Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
Jas 2:18; But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works."
Jas 2:19; You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
Jas 2:20; But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
Jas 2:21; Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
Jas 2:22; You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
Jas 2:23; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS," and he was called the friend of God.
Jas 2:24; You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
Jas 2:25; In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
Jas 2:26; For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

Matt 5:16; "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Eph 2:10; For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
1 Tim 6:18; Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share,

1 Tim 2:9; Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments,
1 Tim 2:10; but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.

1 Tim 5:9; A widow is to be put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man,
1 Tim 5:10; having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.

Col 1:10; so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
2 Thes 2:17; comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.

2 Tim 2:21; Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these things, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.
2 Tim 3:17; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

John 6:27; "Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal."
John 9:4; "We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.

1 Cor 3:13; each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.
1 Cor 3:14; If any man's work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.

1 Cor 15:58; Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.

Gal 6:4; But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another.
Eph 4:12; for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;

Col 3:23; Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,

2 Thes 3:10; For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.
2 Thes 3:11; For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies.
2 Thes 3:12; Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and eat their own bread.

1 Pet 1:17; If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;

Matt 7:24; "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.

@Dave M - already posted this but....
Jas 1:22; But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.

It's almost like we have become the Pharisees.

We have added rules to God's word.

Matt 15:2; "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread."
Matt 15:3; And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

Mar 7:5 The Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, "Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?"
Mar 7:6 And He said to them, "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
Mar 7:7 'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'
Mar 7:8 "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.
"
Mar 7:9 He was also saying to them, "You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
Mar 7:10 "For Moses said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER'; and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH';
Mar 7:11 but you say, 'If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),'
Mar 7:12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;
Mar 7:13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.
"

The Pharisees told everyone do this, don't do that. It's wrong if you don't wash your hands (which wasn't actually in the law).
According to the Pharisees, it was almost wrong to do anything. Jesus says they have neglected the law.. for the sake of their "traditions".
Some churches neglect the word of God, for their "traditions" even today. They have made it a sin to do any good work... where does the Bible say this?

Col 2:20; If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as,
Col 2:21; "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!"
Col 2:22; (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)—in accordance with the traditions and teachings of men?

According to the Pharisees, it was a sin for Jesus to heal on the Sabbath. I can't believe Jesus would do such a sinful thing as healing someone.

Dear Brother @B-A-C
I think you've moved away from what this New Brother in Christ Jesus is asking which is the how and have gone to the why. I do believe he understands that he should, but is looking for practical methods for doing so in his life. Also, I haven't seen any of the posters so far stating that works is non-starter.

God bless you brother.
With the Love of Christ Jesus.

Brother Nick this seems to suggest how to me , and I think its great that he points out some common misconceptions of many.

I suppose some practical examples would be good. Here are what I would call some "general" examples everyone can do.

Matt 25:35; 'For I was hungry, and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you invited Me in;
Matt 25:36; naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.'
Matt 25:37; "Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?
Matt 25:38; 'And when did we see You a stranger, and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?
Matt 25:39; 'When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?'
Matt 25:40; "The King will answer and say to them, 'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.'

Jas 1:27; Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

1 Tim 5:10; having a reputation for good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.

Matt 28:19; "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Matt 28:20; teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Gal 6:2; Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

Jas 2:15; If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food,
Jas 2:16; and one of you says to them, "Go in peace, be warmed and be filled," and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?

Luke 10:33; "But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,
Luke 10:34; and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
Luke 10:35; "On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.'

But there are also specific examples. God may ask you you to do something specific.

Jas 2:21; Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
Jas 2:25; In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?
Heb 11:7; By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

Heb 11:24; By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,
Heb 11:25; choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,

Hello Brother!
Excellent!

Example of your usage of James 2:21 - Do something that will help another that might require you to sacrifice something you cherish. Thereby truly showing the same Love our Lord has communicated to us and is shown throughout Scripture!

You are a joy brother!!! Love you.
Brother hug.

Greetings Frank,

But I was wondering more along lines of just doing somethings to be a blessing..like what could Gods purpose be for me daily ?

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1Thessalonians 5:18

perhaps if we look at what comes 'naturally' for a Christian?
the above verse tells us that "...this is the will of God in Christ Jesus...." and as we have been made new in Him, and through Him, we can and should start becoming all that we are meant to be, for Him.

By giving thanks, in every thing, we get into the right place of being able to serve Him as we ought to. If we are not giving thanks, we tend to get 'sleepy' and the old man rises up and takes over. By giving thanks, we stay in a place of praise to God and it is then that we can do good works, that you ask about.

While we can go out and do all manner of good things, if we don't have the right heart before God regarding 'every thing' then we are more than likely only going to be following the flesh and doing the 'good works' as any other non-believer might do.

A big part of doing good, 'God style' is pleasing Him in our doing. How better to please Him than to honour His Son and we do this really well when we, in every thing give thanks.
Simple doing good is not sufficient. Anyone can do it and plenty do.

Another really important 'good' is prayer. We are told to "pray without ceasing", which again 'puts us' in the 'right heart' to not only hear from the Lord about whatever our hand finds to do, but also when we are 'walking' with Him, we will have the right motive and purpose and expectation in what we do.

and i can not post this without being reminded that without Love (charity in the KJV) all we might do is like making a loud noise... so, being in love with God and loving others with His love is vital if you or i or anyone wants to do what is good in His sight.
One of the 'secret' blessings that we can enjoy is doing things, being content that it is in His sight, not seeking either a reward from Him nor seeking the praise of others for what we do.

Bless you ....><>

Okay yeas I understand that its the heart that made me want to ask this question..
But what if lets say someone walked up to your car as you were getting out of it and said
"I want that car, can I have it?"
I dont think any person would. And saddly if it was me I wouldn't either.
But if anyone even an unbeliever asked for water or food or clothes even spare change or a few dollars. I would give them what I have and try to find a way to get them something to meet their needs.
Fo instance I live at my moms home right now, she's letting me live here, because I'm her son, she is a Christ believer but I dont think she'd let just any stranger stay at her house.
I personally have been homeless and had to stay at a shelter and as long as it was i had no problem with the free shelter...
Is it just as good to point to someone who can help when u got nothing. Although I always feel urged to share food or water-- necessity.
I share when i have but I dont always think Oh, Jesus!
I just give because i guess after hearing about God liking cheerful giving Ive programed my mind to just give when i have and when I have nothing.. Sorry but I have nothing..

I pray that someone could give me a list that I could make into routine with hopes it becomes a habit.
But I am a firm believer that even the most giving person misses an opportunity to do so sometimes, no ones perfect.
I just hope for a list one day

and i can not post this without being reminded that without Love (charity in the KJV) all we might do is like making a loud noise... so, being in love with God and loving others with His love is vital if you or i or anyone wants to do what is good in His sight.
One of the 'secret' blessings that we can enjoy is doing things, being content that it is in His sight, not seeking either a reward from Him nor seeking the praise of others for what we do.

Bless you ....><>

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1Thessalonians 5:18
Also does it count as giving if someone asks on lets say by the bus stop and i give what i have?
Thank you and have a blessed day!

So what works do i do? List as many as you think of please

you know if we look at the book of acts and see what happened when the early church was filled with holly spirit is a another great example of good works, the bottom line was that they were all generous loving there neighbor as they loved them selves. They all sold what they had in order for everyone to be taken care of.

giving is one of the greatest joys a person can experience, and I would have to call that a good work if done with the right heart.

giving can include your time or money

Acts 2:44 -46
