A Song of Ascents. I will lift up my eyes to the hills--From whence comes my help? 2 My help [comes] from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. Psalm 121:1-2 GW
The historic Oregon Trail has been called America's longest graveyard. If evenly spaced out, there would be a grave every 50 yards from Missouri to Oregon City. The fertile Willamette Valley was called America's new Promised Land, yet nearly 65,000 people died trying to reach it.
Instead of jumping back in history 145 to 170 years, imagine what it must have been like traveling from Egypt to the original Promised Land approximately 2,500 years ago. In that case, more people died without reaching their goal.
Psalm 121 is the second pilgrim psalm of ascents to Jerusalem for the annual Jewish feasts. In the previous psalm, you read about the psalmist's desire to come to Jerusalem. In this psalm, you join him on the journey.
The mountain ranges between various foreign lands and the Promised Land often caused much concern. Yet the psalmist is quick to say, "My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth." He won't let your foot slip. He won't sleep on the job. Instead, He will keep you, shade you, and guard all your activities from here on out.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for journeying with me every step of the way through this life.
