And David inquired of God, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hand?" The LORD said to him, "Go up, for I will deliver them into your hand." 1 Chronicles 14:10
Men of action sometimes see prayer as a last resort, but men of faith ask God first. King David learned this the hard way in the previous chapter. Over the next few chapters, you see David asking God first before taking any action.
The first two times, David prays about whether to attack the raiding Philistines. The first time, God says, "Attack!" The second time, however, God gives much different instructions. David never could have dreamed up those instructions. He needed to hear from God.
The third time David prays, the Lord reminds him that He already had given detailed written instructions to Moses on how to transport the ark. No one else needed to risk suffering the terrible consequences of disobeying God like Uzzah (1 Chronicles 13:10). Instead, God's people celebrated with all their might.
"Ask God first" may sound like, "Pray before you eat," but it's actually a vitally important principle for all of life.
Before taking any action, ask God first. And here's why…
Ask God first + listen to God + obey God = Success.
Prayer: Lord, I confess that I often fail to ask You before pursuing a course of action I confess this to You. Please remind me to ask You first…every time.
