But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart; for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam, who had made Israel sin. 2 Kings 10:31
Jehu had a rare opportunity to set the kingdom of Israel back on course toward God. He had had an amazingly zealous start, but he quickly lost his zeal and determination to remove the false images previous kings had set up.
He no doubt felt pressure to stick with the customs established by previous generations. The northern tribes had worshipped the golden calves for centuries. They were sinful, true, but Jehu desired to consolidate his role as king, so he stopped short of God's commands to completely rid the land of idols. Future generations suffered the consequences of his compromise.
It's easy to settle for half measures and to stop short of following through on God's calling. There may be less resistance and less conflict if you only take half measures. However, the consequence of failing to completely trust and obey God is the sin and disobedience will continue to exist. Letting sin remain in your life can lead to problems in the future.
At one point or another, you'll have to choose who you will serve, so know this: a divided heart will always give way when put under pressure.
Prayer: Lord, reveal the compromises of my life, and help me to serve You without reservation.
