Sympathy is not in the Bible but Compassion is mentioned 39 times in the Word. Did you ever notice that?
Sympathy by itself is pretty much worthless emotion. It does nobody any good...
Compassion, on the other hand, is feeling the other persons hurt and doing something to alleviate it. When somebody shares their pain with you, you can either feel bad for them or you can help them out. Is it foolish or silly to share with them what they need to do to come out of their situation a winner? I think not.
What about you? Would you prefer to simply feel bad for them and feed their desire for sympathy or would you prefer to show them the way out? Me? I trashed sympathy years ago.
