For everyone who partakes [only] of milk [is] unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, [that is], those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:13-14
Over the past few decades, people in America have become increasingly aware of the importance of a good diet. Now more than ever, you realize that the foods you eat have a huge impact on your longevity and on your general health.
But what about the “spiritual food” you consume daily? Living in the early twenty-first century, you’re bombarded nearly every waking hour with images, music, television shows, and movies that not only don’t enhance your spiritual growth but cause you to be stunted in your growth and generally unhealthy. Not only that, you can turn on your television or computer at any time of the day and find unsound teaching on any number of “Christian” broadcasts.
It’s not always easy for the Christian man to consume a completely spiritually healthy diet. In fact, without a finely honed sense of spiritual discernment, it’s nearly impossible. But you can give yourself a much better chance of good spiritual health when you put everything you watch and hear to two quick tests: (1) Does what I’m watching or listening to build me up in my relationship with the Lord, or does it tear me down? And (2) Does this line up with the truths God has revealed in His Word?
