Overcoming Your Sin

Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalm 119:11

The great nineteenth-century American evangelist Dwight L. Moody is credited with many profound and inspiring quotations, one of them being: “The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible.”

The writer of Psalm 119 would heartily agree with this. In today’s verse, he declared that he kept his heart and mind focused on the Word of God so that he could avoid falling into sin against his God. The same thing can be true for you today.

The writer of the epistle to the Hebrews wrote this of the Bible’s power: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

Sadly, too many Christians don’t make sufficient use of what the apostle Paul called “the sword of the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:17)—and that results in weak, powerless lives. But if you can learn to walk in the tremendous power the Bible gives you to live an overcoming life, you find it possible to say yes to the things that please God and no to the things that displease Him.

Make it your goal to learn to wield this mighty sword by reading God’s Word, memorizing it, and meditating on it.

James 1:21; Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.
