On Simon Peter (Cephas)

Something else I'm curious about, @Lanolin: what definition of ''sin'' are you using? Does it line up with the Bible's definition of sin? Sometimes misunderstandings occur because people are working from different definitions.

What about verse 14 which begins with Paul declaring that they weren't walking according to the truth of the gospel? Disobedience to God's truth = sin, right?

"But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?"
Paul was speaking to Peter in front of the false brethren. Can you look at GAlatians 2:4

Remember when Jesus spoke to peter as he was walking on water and admonished him oh ye of little faith? Why did you doubt? I think that situation was like that one.

Can we say Peter was sinning as he walked on water. Sure he wanted to follow Jesus but unlike the others who stayed in the boat he was rather gungho. Jesus was aslo talking in front of the other disciples.

Im not sure I would cast that as sin. Maybe not as much faith as Paul had but Peter still had faith.
Remember Paul was talking in front of the false brethren and exhorting Peter as well. Peter wasnt constraining anyone to be circumcised like the false brethren were but he was avoiding the gentiles because of these false brethren. Paul then asked oh foolish galatiana who has bewitched you? It wasnt Peter. But he can blame Peter for going to eat with the gentiles at first and then avoiding them.

I think I would be careful to imply that Peter was responsible for a false doctrine. Actually Peter could do something about it, and he did, as we read in his letters.

I just looked at Gal 2:4, and Galatians 2:1-10 is a completely different paragraph than Galatians 2:11-21. According to Gal 2:1, verse 4 is still referring to something that happened at Jerusalem. Verse 14 is in the latter paragraph, which is about an incident that happened in Antioch.

Keep it in context, sister. A text without its context is a pretext.

Anyway, I'm off for now. The family just arrived here.

I would ask God about it first rather than claim that an apostle sinned after conversion. There were false teachers and prophets sure but not Peter!

But it's not about what we think; it's about what the Bible says. Don't just read your KJV, sister, please learn to believe what you read.

Well anyway think it over and pray about it cos I did. Its not like I knew all this before but something was not right in my spirit to hear that Peter was sinning after conversion. Yes he could be fearful but think about it he just seen his brothers killed for preaching Jesus.

Laura you are grieving the holy spirit when you keep claiming Peter sinned. He could be tempted to by false brethren but he did not sin.

The bible does not say Peter sinned in that situation. Do I need to go through it all again. Look at the context. Read those chapters of Acts and as you say. Believe what the account says. If Peter had sinned back then he would have been struck dead for lying to the holy spirit like anaias and saphirra.

Acts 15 this is where Peter gets asked by Paul about the gentiles in front of the Pharisees who want everyone to be circumcised and Peter gives his answer.

In Galatians 2.11, Paul says Peter was to be blamed. He adds that Peter acted out of fear.

Either Peter was justly blamed by Paul or Paul was unjustly blaming him. Which ever conclusion we arrive at, one of the two key figures in the new testament was in the wrong.

Sadly, none of us, from the greatest to the least, is fully able to live up to our calling.

Peter was to be blamed because he was the first to eat with the gentiles!
If Peter never ate with them in the first place, Paul would not have appealed to Peter to explain himself!

You all are not really getting it.

You also dont remember how Stephen was killed for preaching the gospel by those of the circumcision. There was a lot of persecution right from thr start. Of course Paul was actually one of them, who was party to it when he was Saul. But as we know Paul was converted.

The thing is in Galatians 2:4 Paul writes there are false brethren being privlily (secretly) bought in teaching things contrary to the gospel. He didnt actually know who was bewitching or troubling the gentiles to be circumcised so he was asking Peter about it in front of everyone.

PAul also explains this issue in chapter 3 of Romans.

Paul was asking Peter and Peter gave his answer to the edification of everyone there..the holy ghost giving him the words to say. JAmes also backed him up with words from the Prophets.

Acts 15:7-21

We dont know how many apostles and elders were gathered at that meeting that day, but we do know that there may have been elders sitting there that werent converted and teaching things contrary to the gospel. They would have heard it. Go back a bit to acts 15:5-6

This is why I point you to acts 15.

Paul and Peter were beloved brothers in the Lord. Yes they had some differences and were called by God to different areas. But that doesnt mean they were both fighting each other and sinning. They had to sort out some issues, that would have come about with the uncoverted Jews amongst them.

2 Peter 15-17 shows this. The error wasnt with Peter or Paul. It was with those false apostles who were in error and leading the rest astray, teaaching things contrary to the gospel.

See 2 Peter 2:1-2

Ok I have posted enough but I beseech you to prayerfully read the scriptures God has pointed out, compare them with each other, and you will see.

I dont want to hear anymore talk of how its ok to sin just cos you think Peter did after conversion, and Paul as well. They both were mighty men of God and did what God called them to do. They were not hypocrites or false apostles, that is a false charge. They proved themselves worthy. Their letters are in the new testament for all of us to read. Plus James and John.

They were dealing with other false apostles who were amongst them that were leading new believers astray.

The false brethren were in Jerusalem.

It's easy to get things twisted here.

Gal 2:1; Then after an interval of fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also.
Gal 2:2; It was because of a revelation that I went up; and I submitted to them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but I did so in private to those who were of reputation, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain.
Gal 2:3; But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised.
Gal 2:4; But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage.

The "bondage" here is circumcision. It tells us this in verse 3.
The false brethren were Jews who were telling the Gentiles they had to be circumcized.

Gal 2:11; But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.

The argument between Peter and Paul was in Antioch and had nothing to do with "false brethren" who were Gentiles (they were Jews)

If you don't want to hear what the Bible says, that's up to you.. but it says....

Gal 2:14 ; But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?

Peter was living like a Gentile (sinner). On top of that he was telling the Gentiles they had to be circimcized, just to make the Jews happy.

Peter might be a mighty man of God, but he denied Jesus three times after confessing he was the son of God... was that a sin?

Do you think its not a sin to deny Jesus?

Gal 2:14;

(AMPC) But as soon as I saw that they were not straightforward and were not living up to the truth of the Gospel, I said to Cephas (Peter) before everybody present, If you, though born a Jew, can live [as you have been living] like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how do you dare now to urge and practically force the Gentiles to [comply with the ritual of Judaism and] live like Jews?
(ASV) But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Cephas before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest as do the Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, how compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
(ESV) But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, “If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
(GW) But I saw that they were not properly following the truth of the Good News. So I told Cephas in front of everyone, "You're Jewish, but you live like a person who is not Jewish. So how can you insist that people who are not Jewish must live like Jews?"
(HCSB) But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone, "If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?"
(KJV) But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
(MKJV) But when I saw that they did not walk uprightly with the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before all, If you, being a Jew, live as a Gentile, and not as the Jews, why do you compel the nations to judaize?
(MSG) But when I saw that they were not maintaining a steady, straight course according to the Message, I spoke up to Peter in front of them all: "If you, a Jew, live like a non-Jew when you're not being observed by the watchdogs from Jerusalem, what right do you have to require non-Jews to conform to Jewish customs just to make a favorable impression on your old Jerusalem cronies?"
(NAS77) But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?

@Lanolin

Ok no one here is saying they were not Godly men, they were the best Godly men of the earth, yet still not worthy of salvation do you understand?

yet they we not worthy of salvation no one is, if you do not understand that you do not understand the basics of Christianity and you should seek the truth.

Do you know what grace is??

Do you know why we need grace?

I say all this in Love and interest of the truth.

You are confusing scriptures BAC. Firstly read the bible in order and dont skip passages. Galatians is talking about one thing and its not false brethren that are gentiles, its false brethren that are jewish.

Remember salvatian comes from the jews first, then goes to the gentiles.

Peter was NOT telling gentiles they had to be circumcised. You have inferred that from what Paul said but he was not just addressing Peter but all the elders and apostles in that meeting. Paul was adressing Peter in front of them all because it was Peter who first ATE with the Jews. Peter had been given a visiion about clean and unclean foods from God, and it was ok for him to eat - not a vision that he had to circumcise gentiles,

It was the other uncoverted jews who had bought in another teaching that gentiles then had to be circumcised.

Peter, before he was filled with then holy ghost had denied Jesus but again that was before he was converted. Why are you bringing up his old man again. Peter had been forgiven.

Peter was following Jesus instructions to feed his sheep and lambs and EAT with them.

Gal 2:14;

Um no, your eyes arent seeing the rest of scripture, and why are you using 14 different versions? Paul was asking a question to Peter in front of them all, who are 'them all'?

Ask the Lord to show you what was really going on before you start accusing Peter of sinning.

PAul was simply asking a question that needed an answer as he could see people were being led astray, Peter was meant to be in charge of the jewish believers, Paul was called to spread the gospel to the gentiles. In galatians he asks who has bewitched you, it wasnt Peter. Read the following passage.

He didnt find out who it was then but he was trying to find out from Peter!

I dont read of Peter repenting if Paul is accusing Peter.

You have had at least three people try to help you see the light yet you refuse,
No, it is you are refusing to see the light. This thread I made to help YOU.

What agenda do people have to accuse Peter of sinning when he did not.

Lets go on to read Peters two letters. Lets discern spiritually here.

1 Peter was written to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, Bithynia..

Galatia? Yes the galatians! Lets read this letter. In it does Peter tell the galatians and others they need to be circumcised? Hmm I dont read that anywhere. What does he write to them then?

have a blessed day may the lord open your eyes. No man ever walked the earth sinless other then Jesus. and that is before or after being saved. If you dont get that no need to carrying on any further. Ask yourself not one person on this this thread agrees with you, wonder why. I wont be replying any more

Merry Christmas

Do you really think that those reborn of God's seed still bring forth evil works?
Do you really think that the people who have received the gift of the Holy Ghost still commit works that are rebellion to their alleged King?
Do you really think that every one who has ever "turned from" sin "unrepented" later?
If you really do, then the only one's whose life was changed by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ were the sacrificial animals.

If you are correct in your assumptions, you are still living in the OT.

Atpeace agrees with me. I wish people wouldnt lie about repenting of sin when they actually haven't.

Lets look at Peter again.

I mean he really was special to Jesus even when he was being most annoying! He was also weak, but we can see a change in Peter when he converted.

What did Jesus say to Peter after his resurrection when they were having a bbq on the beach. They had a real good conversation.,does anyone remember it?

Wow it seems nobody remembers it....

well I was just reading Peter's second letter again. I love this letter because Peter is writing this to those who have like precious faith and doesn't want us to be unfruitful in the knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

Another thing about this letter is he is writing it before he dies, so we will all remember Jesus and that Peter was eyewitness to his majesty. Chapter 2 of this letter warns of false prophets and false apostles. Hmm I wonder who they could be. Could it be the same ones who were charging Peter with sin when he wasn't? Who were the people with eyes full of adultery? Who were these dogs who were returning to their vomit...?
He wasn't talking about himself.

There will come in the last days scoffers. Well who are these scoffers, walking in their own lusts? Who are the people wresting scriptures to their own destruction?

It is those who still have lusts of the flesh.
It is written..."And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." (Gal 5:24)
They are not "Christ's".

I guess some people believe Jesus just covers their sins and doesnt do anything to set them free. That sad, cos if they knew the truth they would be set free, and when the Son sets you free you are free indeed.

Anyway the conversation Jesus had with Peter...does anyone recall it?
Im very interested to know why 153 fish were caught, why this in particular was noted in the bible.
