Right or wrong (prophets often throw in some of their own stuff in with their message from God), some deviations are allowed by God (as in not punishing the prophet), as long as the message remains the same. We were made with brains and free will and often the messages God gives us is a general messages that are given drama so to speak, to make the message more listenable. Not sure its right, but I have seen it happen.

And so when a man is a man of God and he is speaking what God puts in his mouth, how could it be wrong? Did Elijah add anything to what God gave him to say on that day? Perhaps later if it pleases God we will know for certain...

In Elijah's defense, he was not insulting 'them' but rather their dead god.
1 Kings 18:27 It came about at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened.”

At times the evil that men do needs to be mocked, but we need be certainly that it is time to mock. Only God knows the when and the whom. If we really do know it is because God told us and that may be the case with Elijah. Only God always knows the time to speak and the time to be silent and those to whom He has spoken. We do need to be always hearing His voice, but we do hear other voices. We do need to recognize the difference.
As to insulting a dead god, while that may be so, men also without God are also effectively dead in the eyes of God even they are still walking around in the flesh and talking in the flesh. The question then to ask is do we have the eyes of God always?

Agreed. We should not tolerate evil. I am just harping on the ''mocking them''. I don't think there is evidence of anyone in the bible mocking someone personally. We have to draw a clear line on that.
When I read your OP, Jesus talking to the Pharisees immediately came to mind. We must properly discern how Jesus spoke to them. Jesus mocked their deeds, not them. It is important to understand that Elijah is mocking their dead god and not them.
The kind of wording Elijah uses hits his point home immediately. Very effective speaking style. There are many lines from Jesus where He is borderline sarcastic too.
