We are saved (we escape hell and enter heaven) by grace through faith in the finished work of Christ; and repentance which proves our faith. (No one may enter heaven by any other means)

However, I would like to address one thing that the bible teaches, which Jesus also said, that most do not know: "Christians" will go to hell. Many, many, many "Christians", who believe in Jesus, will go to hell.

Why? They are lacking true repentance.

-They engage and indulge in all forms of sin - and they do so willfully.
-They enjoy watching tv and listening to music that glorifies sin - sex, drugs, violence, debauchery in all its forms.
-They gossip, they hate, they lust, and they do not regard the things of God as holy.

You can tell these people by their fruits - but also by their doctrines.

-They most often times believe that everyone gets to heaven (or at least everyone except hitler).
-They believe that evolution and homosexuality are compatible with the bible; they are always hip to the latest trends.
-They never go to church, read the bible, or listen to any preaching - and if they ever do listen to preaching its usually a 'feel-good' prosperity preacher (you know - God loves you and wants you to be rich).

You can tell them by their friends.

-They spend most of their time hanging out with non-christians (atheists, agnostics, muslims, jews, and people of all faiths)
-The few Christian friends they do have (if they have any at all) are the kinds of ""Christians"" who enjoy vulgar movies and racy music and gossiping and debauchery.

Are you one of these people? Are you resting in the false-security that you "believe in God", that you pray, that your parents were Christians?

"Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you-- unless indeed you fail the test?" (2 Corinthians 13:5)

"“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’" (Matthew 7:21-23)

Got any scripture support for: "repentance which proves our faith"? Just wondering. I, of course, completely agree with you that a lot of people that claim to be Christian will end up in Hell for allowing themselves to be deceived.

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

(James 2:14-26 ESV)

Just to make sure that I understand, you are suggesting that repentance is works?

Yes.
I would also suggest that believing Christ is also a work (it is an action - is it not?). But that is a different conversation I think.

" If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth."
(1 John 1:6 ESV)

Hey, I agree that believing and repenting are works ... completely in our own control. Meaning, we are given the opportunity to do so, but it is up to us to go through with it.

Yeah. From our human perspective, faith is an action - a work. So is repentance. And the bible teaches that both of these works are required for salvation.

However, from God's perspective I would venture to guess that neither faith nor repentance is a human work. Being that we humans are utterly incapable of actually accomplishing them on our own; they are a work of God from start to finish.

Does someone have to be born again to be a Christian? Does someone have to a be a new creature to be a Christian?

Just curious what we are talking about here.

good questions. so, there is a difference = professing "christians" vs. born again, spirit filled Christians.

  • There is no such thing as a true, Born Again Christian, without repentance!
  • There will be many "so called" Christians go to hell.

I think you are talking about people who claim to be Christian, because it makes them feel good to call themselves so. It's not what we believe we are, but what is written in The Book of Life that matters and we all must work diligently to make that grade.

I've already made my feelings on this well known and people who talk the tlk and not walk the walk will never get farther than their minds and hopes will take them, no matter the issue involved.

The simplest way to address this is that anyone going to hell was not a Christian, period!

Again, I find myself agreeing ( weird ) with RJ. There is no point ( that I can see, anyway ) getting into debates over this subject, is there? Are there not enough topics in the Bible to argue over already that we have to invent another? According to scripture, Christians ( without quotation marks ) cannot possibly go to Hell because they have obeyed God's will. This does not nor ever will include the people who claim to be Christians who are not; the Bible calls them false prophets and teachers. There is always room for argument on how one decides the difference between the two, I guess.

2 Pet 2:20; For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
2 Pet 2:21; For it would be better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn away from the holy commandment handed on to them.
2 Pet 2:22; It has happened to them according to the true proverb, "A DOG RETURNS TO ITS OWN VOMIT," and, "A sow, after washing, returns to wallowing in the mire."

Can a non-saved person escape the defilements of the world on their own without Jesus? Or does it require the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? If so, why do we need Jesus?
Can you return to a place that you never left?

Heb 6:4; For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
Heb 6:5l; and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come,
Heb 6:6; and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame.

Can a non-believer be a partaker of the Holy Spirit? If so, why do we need to be a believer to receive it? Can you "fall away" from something you never had in the first place?

Heb 10:29; How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

Can an unsaved person be sanctified by the blood of the covenant? If so, why do we need Jesus? Is it possible for ex-Christians to insult the Spirit of Grace and trample the blood of Jesus under foot?

Exod 32:32; "But now, if You will, forgive their sin--and if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!"
Exod 32:33; The LORD said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book.

Deut 29:20; "The LORD shall never be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the LORD and His jealousy will burn against that man, and every curse which is written in this book will rest on him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven.

Psa 69:28 May they be blotted out of the book of life And may they not be recorded with the righteous.

Rev 3:5l 'He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels.

Why would the Bible say in several places that names can be removed or blotted out from the BOL? Why would your name be in the BOL if you never were a believer in the first place?

Can A Christian Go To Hell?
Another way of answering: That would be an oxymoron!:D

Even people who have received he Holy Spirit can reject Jesus later.

Sorry, BAC, there just seemed to be so much about the Book of Life in that post that I had to wonder if you meant it for the other thread.
