Meet the man
'COME, SEE A MAN.' JOHN 4:29
For some people, past experiences leave them terrified of getting emotionally close to people; hopping in and out of relationships and one night stands gives them a feeling of control where they might otherwise feel powerless. Jesus met a woman at a well with her own relationship issues; five husbands down and counting, a past full of hurts, and a history of regrets, and still no clearer about herself.
Unlike all the other men she'd met, Jesus addressed her real need; 'Come...meet a man who told me everything!' (TLB). Her answer wasn't another man; she'd already tried that! Her answer was meeting the man, and asking Him to fill the void in her life. If you've got trust issues, it may take a lot of guts to put your trust in this man Jesus. But look at the story again, unlike all the other men this woman had met before,
Jesus doesn't want or ask anything dodgy of her. He's not out to use, harm or manipulate her. If He was, with all the woman's background, she'd would've spotted it a mile off. Instead she recognises the Messiah. Come meet a man who is safe to get close to; come meet the Messiah.
