These 10 Bible prophecies were fulfilled after 1948, when Israel became an independent country for the second time in history. These prophecies find fulfillment in Israel's stunning military victories and in its transition from a desert wasteland to a comparatively prosperous nation.

1. Israel will ultimately prevail over its enemies
Bible passage: Isaiah 41:12-14
Written: perhaps between 701-681 BC
Fulfilled: late 1900s

In Isaiah 41:12-14, the prophet proclaimed that the tiny nation of Israel ultimately will prevail over its enemies, and that although its enemies will cease to exist one day, Israel will survive. This prophecy is interesting from an historical perspective. The country of Israel has been conquered and destroyed at different times by very powerful nations and empires, such as Assyria, Babylon and the Roman Empire. Those conquests led to the exile and worldwide dispersion of the people of Israel, and to the desolation of the land of Israel. Even so, Israel is again a sovereign nation today, and the empires of Assyria, Babylon and ancient Rome have vanished long ago. The Nazis tried to destroy the people of Israel during the 1940s. But that decade saw the rebirth of the county of Israel and the destruction of the Nazi empire. From the perspective of various Christian scholars, this prophecy has found partial fulfillment so far, and will be completely fulfilled in the future when all enemies of Israel are destroyed.

Isaiah 41:12-14
Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Do not be afraid, O worm Jacob, O little Israel, for I myself will help you," declares the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

2. The ruins of Israel would be rebuilt
Bible passage: Amos 9:11, 13
Written: about 750 BC
Fulfilled: late 1900s

In Amos 9:11, 13, the prophet said that God would restore the land of David. King David ruled Israel from about 1010 BC to about 970 BC. During that time, Israel was a united and sovereign nation. Afterwards, the land was divided into two kingdoms and later conquered by a succession of world powers. For much of the past 2000 years, the people of Israel have been living in exile in countries around the world, and the land of Israel has been in a state of ruin. During the past two centuries, however, many Jews have returned from exile and have rebuilt and reconditioned much of the land of Israel. The soil is again productive, producing food exports for many countries. And the nation is again sovereign and united.

Amos 9:11, 13
"In that day I will restore David's fallen tent. I will repair its broken places, restore its ruins, and build it as it used to be,'' … "The days are coming," declares the Lord, "when the reaper will be overtaken by the plowman and the planter by the one treading grapes. New wine will drip from the mountains and flow from all the hills."

3. Ezekiel prophesied prosperity for a restored Israel
Bible passage: Ezekiel 36:11
Written: between 593-571 BC
Fulfilled: late 1900s

In Ezekiel 36:11, the prophet said that there would come a time when Israel would be more prosperous than it was in the past. The Bible describes Israel as being a prosperous nation during the time of King David and King Solomon about 3000 years ago. But, Ezekiel knew a very different Israel. In Ezekiel's day (he lived about 2600 years ago), the northern part of the land had been decimated by the Assyrians, and the southern part, called Judah, was being destroyed by the Babylonians. The land of Israel suffered greatly, falling into a state of poverty and desolation that would last for many centuries. But today, Israel again is a sovereign nation. And it is a prosperous nation. In 1999, Israel had the highest per capita Gross Domestic Product of any nearby country, even though the surrounding countries have many oil resources.

Ezekiel 36:11
I will increase the number of men and animals upon you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

4. Trees would flourish again in a desolate Israel
Bible passage: Isaiah 41:18-20
Written: perhaps between 701-681 BC
Fulfilled: late 1900s

In Isaiah 41:18-20, the prophet's talk of a future restoration of Israel coincides with an occurrence in modern Israel - the construction of a vast irrigation system to improve farming. The lack of available water, including rain, is one reason why Israel had been a desolate, unproductive land during much of the past 2000 years. But, during the 1900s, when many Jews returned to their ancient homeland, they built a network of irrigation systems. And during the past century, more than 200 million trees have been planted in Israel.

Isaiah 41:18-20
I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs. I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the myrtle and the olive. I will set pines in the wasteland, the fir and the cypress together, so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this, that the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Note: The Jewish National Fund web site, at www.jnf.org, has information about how people can contribute to the effort to reforest Israel.

5. Isaiah said Israel's fruit would fill the world
Bible passage: Isaiah 27:6
Written: perhaps between 701-681 BC
Fulfilled: late 1900s

In Isaiah 27:6, the prophet said Israel would one day blossom and fill the world with fruit. This prophecy has been at least partially fulfilled so far, literally and spiritually. Today, the land of Israel, which had been barren for centuries, is a leading producer of agricultural products, exporting food to many countries. This prophecy also has been fulfilled spiritually with the worldwide spread of Christianity, which began with Jesus in Israel.

Isaiah 27:6
In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit.

6. Jerusalem would become the world's most important religious site
Bible passage: Micah 4:1
Written: sometime between 750-686 BC
Fulfilled: Partially in modern times

In Micah 4:1, the prophet said that the Temple mount in Jerusalem would become the focal point of the world. Various Christian scholars regard this as a prophecy that is to be fulfilled in the future. But it is interesting to note that Jerusalem is, and has been for centuries, the world's most important religious site. Christians and Jews have always regarded the city as important. Followers of Islam later adopted Jerusalem as an important city in their beliefs. No other city in the world is a religious focal point to as many people.

Micah 4:1
In the last days the mountain of the Lord's temple will be established as chief among the mountains; it will be raised above the hills, and peoples will stream to it.

7. Egypt would never again rule over nations
Bible passage: Ezekiel 29:15
Written: between 593-571 BC
Fulfilled: 1967, etc.

In Ezekiel 29:15, the prophet says that Egypt would recover from a desolation (perhaps Babylon's attack about 2600 years ago), but that it would never again rule over other nations. Up until the time of Ezekiel, Egypt had been a world power for centuries, dominating many nations, including Israel. But for most of the past 2500 years, Egypt has been controlled by foreign powers, including the Romans, Ottomans and Europeans. Today, Egypt is an independent nation again. In 1948, 1967 and 1973, Egypt tried to dominate Israel but was unsuccessful each time, despite the fact that Egypt is 10 times larger than Israel. Egypt today, in many respects, is an impressive nation. But since the time of Ezekiel, it no longer rules over other nations.

Ezekiel 29:15
… I will make it so weak that it will never again rule over the nations.

8. Zechariah prophesied the Jews return to Jerusalem
Bible passage: Zechariah 8:7-8
Written: between 520 and 518 BC
Fulfilled: 1967, etc.

In Zechariah 8:7-8, the prophet said God would bring the Jews from exile back to their homeland (Israel) and that they would be able to live in the city of Jerusalem again. This prophecy has been fulfilled more than once. About 2600 years ago, Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and took many Jews as captives to Babylon. But many Jews later returned from Babylon. The Jews rebuilt Jerusalem but the city was destroyed about 1900 years ago by the Romans. The Romans killed more than 1 million Jews and forced many more into exile. And, the Romans banned Jews from living in Jerusalem. More than 1800 years passed before the Jews had control of Jerusalem again. They reclaimed control of their ancient capital during the Six Day War of 1967.

Zechariah 8:7-8
This is what the Lord Almighty says: "I will save my people from the countries of the east and the west. I will bring them back to live in Jerusalem; they will be my people, and I will be faithful and righteous to them as their God."

9. Israel's deserts will become like the Garden of Eden
Bible passage: Isaiah 51:3
Written: perhaps between 701-681 BC
Fulfilled: Being fulfilled now

In Isaiah 51:3, the prophet said that God will restore Israel and make it a paradise, like the garden of Eden. This foreshadows what is currently happening in Israel. The Jews have been irrigating, cultivating and reconditioning the land during much of the 1900s. Many of the country's swamps, which had been infested with malaria, have been converted into farmland. And water from the Sea of Galilee has been channeled through portions of the deserts, allowing some of the deserts to bloom. Much work remains, but parts of Israel are blooming again. Although it was described as a wasteland as recently as the late 1800s, Israel is now a food source for many countries. And at least 200 million of trees have been planted there during the past century.

Isaiah 51:3
The Lord will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

10. Isaiah foretold of the worldwide return of Jews to Israel
Bible passage: Isaiah 43:5-6
Written: perhaps between 701-681 BC
Fulfilled: late 1900s

In Isaiah 43:5-6, the prophet said that the people of Israel would return to their homeland from the east, the west, the north and the south. Isaiah lived 2700 years ago. Beginning at that time, a succession of empires conquered the land of Israel and forced many into exile. This led to a worldwide scattering of Jews. But, during the past century, millions have returned to Israel.

From the east: Many Jews living in Middle East countries moved to Israel during the 1900s. After Israel reclaimed independence in 1948, more Jews moved to their ancient homeland after being forced out of various Arab countries in which they had been living for centuries.

From the west: During the mid-1900s, hundreds of thousands of Jews living in the West (Europe and the United States) began moving to Israel to escape various persecutions, most notably, the Holocaust in Nazi Germany.

From the north: Hundreds of thousands of Jews living in the former Soviet Union have moved to Israel since the 1980s.

From the south: During the 1980s and 1990s, Israel struck a deal with Ethiopia's communist government to allow Jews of Ethiopia to move to Israel. On the weekend of May 25, 1991, for example, 14,500 Ethiopian Jews were airlifted to Israel.

Isaiah's prophecy was also correct in saying that the north (Russia) and the south (Ethiopia) would have to be persuaded to allow their Jews to move to Israel. Many countries pressured Russia for years before it began to allow its Jews to leave. And Ethiopia had to be paid a ransom to allow its Jews to leave.

Isaiah's prophecy was also correct in saying that the Jews would return "from the ends of the earth," and Isaiah said that many centuries before the Jews had been scattered to the ends of the earth. During the past 100 years, Jews living as far east as China, as far west as the West Coast of the United States, as far north as Scandinavia, and as far south as South Africa, Australia and South America, have moved to Israel.

Isaiah 43:5-6
"Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, `Give them up!' and to the south, `Do not hold them back.' Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth…"

If I understand correctly, Christ will come back just before the The New World Order comes into play. We are either at the end of the third seal, or the beginning of the fourth. Either way, the time for Christ's return is coming fast.

That is really amazing! I can't wait until Jesus comes back....
BUT seriously, would you be excited if Jesus sent you a text message saying that He was coming back tomorrow??? I would be stressing out trying to get everybody I know saved.... so Wait a minute.... If I was told when Jesus is coming back, then I would be trying to get tons of people saved. But if He didn't tell me then I shouldn't care??? NO! You need to be out there on the battlefield getting people saved! Jesus IS coming back SOON and we need to be ready! We Christians cannot rest until the Whole World Hears Jesus' name.

This prophecy is interesting from an historical perspective. The country of Israel has been conquered and destroyed at different times by very powerful nations and empires, such as Assyria, Babylon and the Roman Empire.

If sincere Bible students were to look very closely and unbiased at Jesus words at Matthew 23:37-39, these could recognize that the nation of fleshly Israel is no longer God's people.

Jesus, in looking at Jerusalem (as the center of worship for the nation) just three days before his death (on Nisan 14, 33 C.E.), said: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the killer of the prophets and stoner of those sent forth to her,—how often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks together under her wings ! But you people did not want it. Look! Your house is abandoned to you. For I say to you, you will by no means see me from henceforth until you say, ‘Blessed is he that comes in Jehovah’s name !’”

Hours earlier, Jesus had told the Jewish religious leaders an illustration of a "man, a householder, who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and erected a tower, and let it out to cultivators, and traveled abroad. When the season of the fruits came around, he dispatched his slaves to the cultivators to get his fruits. However, the cultivators took his slaves, and one they beat up, another they killed, another they stoned. Again he dispatched other slaves, more than the first, but they did the same to these. Lastly he dispatched his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ On seeing the son the cultivators said among themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance!’ So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him."(Matt 21:33-39)

Jesus now asks the Jewish religious leaders this question: "Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those cultivators?”(Matt 21:40) They replied: "Because they are evil, he will bring an evil destruction upon them and will let out the vineyard to other cultivators, who will render him the fruits when they become due.”(Matt 21:41)

Who was the "owner of the vineyard" ? Jehovah God, in which he "planted" the nation of Israel in 1513 B.C.E. as a "vineyard" at Mount Sinai, some 2 months after leaving Egypt.(Ex 19:1, 5, 6) However, these became, not "grapes" that would produce fine wine, but "wild grapes".(Isa 5:1, 2)

In 607 B.C.E, as a result of their being "wild grapes", Jehovah allowed the Babylonians to destroy the land of Judah, for he had said: "And now, please, may I make known to you men what I am doing to my vineyard: There will be a removing of its hedge, and it must be destined for burning down. There must be a breaking down of its stone wall, and it must be destined for a place of trampling. And I shall set it as a thing destroyed. It will not be pruned, nor will it be hoed. And it must come up with the thornbush and weeds; and upon the clouds I shall lay a command to keep from precipitating any rain upon it."(Isa 5:5, 6) And why ? Because God "kept hoping for (righteous) judgment, but, look! the breaking of law; for righteousness, but, look! an outcry (of justice being thrown out).”(Isa 5:7)

The Scripture at Isaiah 41:12-14, speaks of the nation of fleshly Israel before their being "abandoned" by God to themselves in 33 C.E. God says of the nation of fleshly Israel, that he is their "Repurchaser"(Isa 41:14), buying them back from Babylonian captivity (of 70 years, from 607-537 B.C.E.). However, over the course of some 1500 years, from 1513 B.C.E. til 33 C.E., Jehovah watched to see if the nation of fleshly Israel would "measure up" to being his righteous people.

Six months before Jesus death, Jesus gave an illustration about the "status quo" of the nation, saying: "A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it, but found none. Then he said to the vinedresser, ‘Here it is three years that I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, but have found none. Cut it down! Why really should it keep the ground useless?' In reply he said to him, ‘Master, let it alone also this year, until I dig around it and put on manure; and if then it produces fruit in the future, [well and good]; but if not, you shall cut it down.’” (Luke 13:6-9)

By the spring of 33 C.E., it was now very apparent that the nation of fleshly Israel was not righteous, but rather was a "killer of the prophets and stoner of those sent forth to her", even murdering Jehovah's "only-begotten Son", Jesus.(1 Thess 2:14, 15) These thence suffered "an evil destruction" in 70 C.E., when the Roman armies under the command of General Titus destroyed the city of Jerusalem over the course of April 3 through August 25.

IM4Jesus,

The Matthew 24 prophecy of Jesus, "that generation will not pass away till all these things be fulfilled", is understood by me in this way.

Declared through the UN nationhood in Sept 1948, so what we must do is view that year in it's fullness, which is start 1949, 1948 cannot be complete till the beginning of 1949 is reached.
Therefore, the 70years of the gentile occupation of Jerusalem is 49+70=2019, taking away the 7yrs of tribulation we arrive at the year 2012 for the beginning of the tribulation.

The occultic Mayan calendar claiming the end of the world in 2012 is very deceptive in that it is indeed,' the end of the world as we know it', but not at all the literal end.
I think there's alot of potential fact in many conspiracy claims, if we're at this point in human history there will be great falsehoods and illusions foisted on the general population.

Will there be an attack by so-called terrorists or Aliens at the London Olympics, I don't know, but I do believe we are in that time frame and things like that will happen. Signs and wonders, global deception by anti-christ and his puppets government supporters, it's going to happen, but how, that's the only question as far as I can see.

By the way any reference to Israel in prophecy isn't only about the Zionist Jews but also the regenerated church of Jesus Christ, people have to understand that, there is Israel and then there's spiritual Israel if you know what I mean.

Jaareshiah,

Your information is INACCURATE regarding the fall of Jerusalem. It is 587 BC not 607.

The Jehovah's witnesses failed to do their homework and have been perpetuating that INACCURACY for decades.

It is good to see you are still trolling Christian sites. I hope you will think for yourself and do a wee bit of research on the fall of Jerusalem and realize the organizations calculations to get to the 1914 date is total ... crap.

Matthew 24: 11 Then many false prophets will appear and fool many people. 12 Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold. 13 But whoever holds out to the end will be saved. 14 And this Good News about the Kingdom will be preached through all the world for a witness to all people; and then the end will come.

Strypes<== hums a Casting Crowns song as she types...

"Ready yourselves, Ready yourselves
Let us shine the light of Jesus in the darkest night
Ready yourselves, ready yourselves
May the powers of darkness tremble as our praises rise

Until the whole world hears, Lord, we are calling out
Lifting up your name for all to hear the sound
Like voices in the wilderness, we're crying out
And as the day draws near
We'll sing until the whole world hears"

Lifting up the name of JESUS!

not jehovah.. the false god of the watchtower corporation..

As their "jesus" is not Jesus at all but some angel.

Therefore their "god" is not God Almighty, creator of Heaven and Earth.

The Watchtower is just a bunch of False Prophets... 1897..1899.. 1914...1918...1925....

1897 "Our Lord, the appointed King, is now present, since October 1874," (Studies in the Scriptures, vol. 4, p. 621).
1899 "...the 'battle of the great day of God Almighty' (Revelation 16:14), which will end in A.D. 1914 with the complete overthrow of earth's present rulership, is already commenced," (The Time Is at Hand, 1908 edition, p. 101).
1916 "The Bible chronology herein presented shows that the six great 1000 year days beginning with Adam are ended, and that the great 7th Day, the 1000 years of Christ's Reign, began in 1873," (The Time Is at Hand, forward, p. ii).
1918 "Therefore we may confidently expect that 1925 will mark the return of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the faithful prophets of old, particularly those named by the Apostle in Hebrews 11, to the condition of human perfection," (Millions Now Living Will Never Die, p. 89).
1922 "The date 1925 is even more distinctly indicated by the Scriptures than 1914," (Watchtower, Sept. 1, 1922, p. 262).
1923 "Our thought is, that 1925 is definitely settled by the Scriptures. As to Noah, the Christian now has much more upon which to base his faith than Noah had upon which to base his faith in a coming deluge," (Watchtower, Apr. 1, 1923, p. 106).
1925 "The year 1925 is here. With great expectation Christians have looked forward to this year. Many have confidently expected that all members of the body of Christ will be changed to heavenly glory during this year. This may be accomplished. It may not be. In his own due time God will accomplish his purposes concerning his people. Christians should not be so deeply concerned about what may transpire this year," (Watchtower, Jan. 1, 1925, p. 3).
1925 "It is to be expected that Satan will try to inject into the minds of the consecrated, the thought that 1925 should see an end to the work," (Watchtower, Sept., 1925, p. 262).
1926 "Some anticipated that the work would end in 1925, but the Lord did not state so. The difficulty was that the friends inflated their imaginations beyond reason; and that when their imaginations burst asunder, they were inclined to throw away everything," (Watchtower, p. 232).
1931 "There was a measure of disappointment on the part of Jehovah's faithful ones on earth concerning the years 1917, 1918, and 1925, which disappointment lasted for a time...and they also learned to quit fixing dates," (Vindication, p. 338).
1941 "Receiving the gift, the marching children clasped it to them, not a toy or plaything for idle pleasure, but the Lord's provided instrument for most effective work in the remaining months before Armageddon," (Watchtower, Sept. 15, 1941, p. 288).
1968 "True, there have been those in times past who predicted an 'end to the world', even announcing a specific date. Yet nothing happened. The 'end' did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying. Why? What was missing?.. Missing from such people were God's truths and evidence that he was using and guiding them," (Awake, Oct. 8, 1968).
1968 "Why are you looking forward to 1975?" (Watchtower, Aug. 15, 1968, p. 494).

Jaareshiah,

How many failed prophecies does it take to make one a False Prophet? (ONE)

The Watchtower is by definition a false prophet..

Don't give me that old light / new light mind numbing ambiguousness. ... It only takes ONE failed prophecy to be a false prophet.. You can call your failed prophecies "old light" if you wish but they are still failed prophecies.

It is historical fact.. google it.

607 is used only by the Watchtower to promote their 1914 doctrine..

How about you attempt to defend that doctrine... especially the "generation that knew the generation that ..."

bet you can't..

I googled it for you...

Following the siege of 597 BC, Nebuchadnezzar installed Zedekiah as tributary king of Judah at the age of twenty-one. However, Zedekiah revolted against Babylon, and entered into an alliance with Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt. Nebuchadnezzar responded by invading Judah[1] and began a siege of Jerusalem in January 589 BC. During this siege, which lasted about thirty months, "every worst woe befell the city, which drank the cup of God's fury to the dregs".[2] In 587 BC, the eleventh year of Zedekiah's reign, Nebuchadnezzar broke through Jerusalem's walls, conquering the city. Zedekiah and his followers attempted to escape, but were captured on the plains of Jericho and taken to Riblah. There, after seeing his sons killed, Zedekiah was blinded, bound, and taken captive to Babylon,[3] where he remained a prisoner until his death.

After the fall of Jerusalem, the Babylonian general Nebuzaraddan was sent to complete its destruction. Jerusalem was plundered and Solomon's Temple was destroyed. Most of the elite were taken into captivity in Babylon. The city was razed to the ground. Only a small number of people were permitted to remain to tend to the land.[4] Gedaliah was made governor of the remnant of Judah, the Yehud Province, with a Chaldean guard stationed at Mizpah.[5] On hearing this news, the Jews who were in Moab, Ammon, Edom, and in other countries returned to Judah.[6] Gedaliah was assassinated two months later, and the population that had remained and those who had returned then fled to Egypt for safety.[7] In Egypt, they settled in Migdol, Tahpanhes, Noph, and Pathros.[8]

Zedekiah is chained and brought before Nebuchadnezzar, from Petrus Comestor's "Bible Historiale," 1670.

The Babylonian Chronicles, published in 1956, indicate that Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem the first time putting an end to the reign of Jehoaichin on 2 Adar (16 March) 597 BC.[9]

There has been some debate as to when the second siege of Jerusalem took place. Though there is no dispute that Jerusalem fell the second time in the summer month of Tammuz (Jeremiah 52:6), William F. Albright dates the end of Zedekiah's reign (and the fall of Jerusalem) to 587 BC, whereas Edwin R. Thiele offers 586 BC.[10]

Thiele's reckoning is based on the presentation of Zedekiah's reign on an accession basis, which was used for most but not all of the kings of Judah. In that case, the year that Zedekiah came to the throne would be his zeroth year; his first full year would be 597/596 BC, and his eleventh year, the year Jerusalem fell, would be 587/586 BC. Since Judah's regnal years were counted from Tishri in autumn, this would place the end of his reign and the capture of Jerusalem in the summer of 586 BC.[10][11]

However, the Babylonian Chronicles support the enumeration of Zedekiah's reign on a non-accession basis. Zedekiah's first year when he was installed by Nebuchadnezzar was therefore in 598/597 BC according to Judah's Tishri-based calendar. The fall of Jerusalem in his eleventh year would then have been in the summer of 587 BC. The Babylonian Chronicles allow the fairly precise dating of the capture of Jehoiachin and the start of Zedekiah's reign, and also provide the accession year of Nebuchadnezzar's successor Amel-Marduk (Evil Merodach) as 562/561 BC, which was the 37th year of Jehoiachin's captivity according to 2 Kings 25:27. These Babylonian records related to Jehoiachin's reign are consistent with the fall of the city in 587 BC.

It is historical fact.. google it.

607 is used only by the Watchtower to promote their 1914 doctrine..

How about you attempt to defend that doctrine... especially the "generation that knew the generation that ..."

bet you can't..

You are one that contested it, so the ball is in your court to prove it wrong and by the Bible, such as when ancient Babylon fell. This one date provides the time line for when Jerusalem fell for the first time.

Psalms 87
A song. A psalm of the descendants of Korah.
1 On the holy mountain
stands the city founded by the LORD.
2 He loves the city of Jerusalem
more than any other city in Israel. [2]
3 O city of God,
what glorious things are said of you! Interlude

4 I will count Egypt [4] and Babylon among those who know me—
also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia. [4]
They have all become citizens of Jerusalem!
5 Regarding Jerusalem [5] it will be said,
"Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there."
And the Most High will personally bless this city.
6 When the LORD registers the nations, he will say,
"They have all become citizens of Jerusalem." Interlude

7 The people will play flutes [7] and sing,
"The source of my life springs from Jerusalem!"

Jaareshiah,

Your information is INACCURATE regarding the fall of Jerusalem. It is 587 BC not 607.

The Jehovah's witnesses failed to do their homework and have been perpetuating that INACCURACY for decades.

It is good to see you are still trolling Christian sites. I hope you will think for yourself and do a wee bit of research on the fall of Jerusalem and realize the organizations calculations to get to the 1914 date is total ... crap.

To accurately establish when Jerusalem fell, it is necessary to establish when ancient Babylon fell to the Medo-Persians. Why ? Because of the prophecy that Jehovah God said regarding the land of Judah lying desolate at Jeremiah 25:8, 11 some years before its desolation, in which Jeremiah wrote: "Therefore this is what Jehovah of armies has said, ‘“For the reason that you did not obey my words.....And all this land must become a devastated place, an object of astonishment, and these nations will have to serve the king of Babylon seventy years.”

Jehovah then says: "‘In accord with the fulfilling of seventy years at Babylon I shall turn my attention to you people, and I will establish toward you my good word in bringing you back to this place.’ "(Jer 29:10) This is an essential clue to when Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians.

Ezra, who lived after the 70 years of Jeremiah’s prophecy were fulfilled, wrote of King Nebuchadnezzar: "Furthermore, he carried off those remaining from the sword captive to Babylon, and they came to be servants to him and his sons until the royalty of Persia began to reign; to fulfill Jehovah’s word by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had paid off its sabbaths. All the days of lying desolated it kept sabbath, to fulfill seventy years."(2 Chron 36:20, 21)

Thus, in establishing when ancient Babylon fell and when the repatriated Jews arrived back in the land of Judah after seventy years of bondage to Babylon, can then be used to determine when Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians.

The prophet Daniel, who lived until “the kingdom of Persia came to power,” was on the scene in Babylon, and he calculated when the 70 years were due to end. He wrote: "In the first year of Da·ri´us the son of A·has·u·e´rus of the seed of the Medes, who had been made king over the kingdom of the Chal·de´ans; in the first year of his reigning I myself, Daniel, discerned by the books the number of the years concerning which the word of Jehovah had occurred to Jeremiah the prophet, for fulfilling the devastations of Jerusalem, [namely,] seventy years."(Dan 9:1, 2)

Ezra reflected on the prophecies of Jeremiah and linked the end of “the seventy years” to the time when “in the first year of Cyrus the king of Persia, that Jehovah’s word by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, Jehovah roused the spirit of Cyrus the king of Persia, so that he caused a cry to pass through all his kingdom.” (2 Chronicles 36:21, 22)

When were the Jews released ? The decree ending their exile was issued in “the first year of Cyrus the king of Persia" over Babylon or 539 B.C.E. Thus, within 2 years or by the fall of 537 B.C.E., some 50,000 Jews had traveled a distance of some 500 miles on foot from Babylon and returned to Jerusalem to restore true worship, arriving there in the seventh month.("seventh month" [Tishri] that corresponded to middle of Sept-middle of October, Ezra 1:1-5; 2:1; 3:1-5) According to Bible chronology, then, the 70 years was a literal period of time that ended in 537 B.C.E. Counting back 70 years, the start date of the period would be 607 B.C.E. , the fall of Jerusalem.

But if the evidence from the inspired Scriptures clearly points to 607 B.C.E. for Jerusalem’s destruction, why do many authorities hold to the date 587 B.C.E.? They lean on two sources of information—the writings of classical historians and the canon of Ptolemy. Are these sources more reliable than the Scriptures?

Historians who lived close to the time when Jerusalem was destroyed give mixed information about the Neo-Babylonian kings. The time line based on their chronological information disagrees with that of the Bible. But just how reliable are their writings ?

One of the historians who lived closest to the Neo-Babylonian period was Berossus, a Babylonian “priest of Bel.” His original work, the Babyloniaca, written about 281 B.C.E., has been lost, and only fragments are preserved in the works of other historians. Berossus claimed that he used “books which had been preserved with great care at Babylon.”(Babyloniaca [Chaldaeorum Historiae], Book One, 1.1) Was Berossus really an accurate historian? Consider one example.

Berossus wrote that Assyrian King Sennacherib followed “the reign of [his] brother”; and “after him his son [Esarhaddon ruled for] 8 years; and thereafter Sammuges [Shamashshuma-ukin] 21 years.” (III, 2.1, 4) However, Babylonian historical documents written long before Berossus’ time say that Sennacherib followed his father, Sargon II, not his brother, to the throne; Esarhaddon ruled for 12 years, not 8; and Shamash-shuma-ukin ruled for 20 years, not 21.

Scholar R. J. vander Spek, while acknowledging that Berossus consulted the Babylonian chronicles, wrote: “This did not prevent him from making his own additions and interpretations.”(Studies in Ancient Near Eastern World View and Society, pg 295, published in June, 2008)

How do other scholars view Berossus ? “In the past Berossus has usually been viewed as a historian,” states S. M. Burstein, who made a thorough study of Berossus’ works. Yet, he concluded: “Considered as such his performance must be pronounced inadequate. Even in its present fragmentary state the Babyloniaca contains a number of surprising errors of simple fact . . . In a historian such flaws would be damning, but then Berossus’ purpose was not historical.”(The Babyloniaca of Berossus, page 8, 1978)

Should Berossus’ calculations really be viewed as consistently accurate ? And what about the other classical historians who, for the most part, based their chronology on the writings of Berossus ? Can their historical conclusions really be called reliable ?

The Royal Canon of Claudius Ptolemy, a second-century C.E. astronomer, is also used to support the traditional date 587 B.C.E. for the fall of Jerusalem. Ptolemy’s list of kings is considered the backbone of the chronology of ancient history, including the Neo-Babylonian period.

Ptolemy compiled his list some 600 years after the Neo-Babylonian period ended. So how did he determine the date when the first king on his list began to reign ? Ptolemy explained that by using astronomical calculations based in part on eclipses, “we have derived to compute back to the beginning of the reign of Nabonassar,” the first king on his list.( Almagest , III, 7, translated by G. J. Toomer, in Ptolemy’s Almagest, published 1998, pg 166)

Thus, Christopher Walker of the British Museum says that Ptolemy’s canon was “an artificial scheme designed to provide astronomers with a consistent chronology” and was “not to provide historians with a precise record of the accession and death of kings.”(Mesopotamia and Iran in the Persian Period, pages 17-18, published July 1997)

Thus, Ptolemy fails to be accurate historically, with his Neo-Babylonian list of only four kings between the Babylonian rulers Kandalanu and Nabonidus. However, the Uruk King List, an important historiographical document from ancient Babylon—a part of the cuneiform record—reveals that seven kings ruled in between, not four.

Ancient historical sources and cuneiform tablets: Diodorus of Sicily (c. 80-20 B.C.E.) wrote that Cyrus became king of Persia in “the opening year of the Fifty-fifth Olympiad.” (Historical Library, Book IX, 21, with the 1st Olympiad beginning in 776 B.C.E.) That year was 560 B.C.E. The Greek historian Herodotus (c. 485-425 B.C.E.) stated that Cyrus was killed “after he had reigned twenty-nine years,” which would put his death during his 30th year, in 530 B.C.E. (Histories, Book I, Clio, 214) Cuneiform tablets show that Cyrus ruled Babylon for nine years before his death. Thus, nine years prior to his death in 530 B.C.E. takes us back to 539 B.C.E. as the year Cyrus conquered Babylon.

And concerning Wikipedia, it warns that some articles on its site "contain significant misinformation, unencyclopedic content, or vandalism", adding that "users need to be aware of this".

spewing the watchtower babble is not impressive

The watchtower publications are not authoritative. They are known for their out of context quotes. The article you are plagiarizing is the November 1, 2011 Watchtower.

A member of another forum contacted the author that was misquoted and confirmed it.

I wrote to Dr. John M. Steele whose work is cited in footnote 18a of the article. He gave me permission to share the following response:

Dear Ms Alley,

Thank you for your email concerning the citation of my work in the

recent Watchtower article. As you suggest the author of this piece is

completely misrepresenting what I wrote, both in what they say about

the lunar three measurement, and in what I say about the possibility

of retrocalculation of eclipses (my comments on the latter were

restricted to a distinct and small group of texts which are different

to the Diary they are discussing). Just glancing through the

Watchtower article I can see that they have also misrepresented the

views of other scholars by selective quotation out of context.

I've looked at the date of VAT 4956 on several occasions and see no

possibility that it can be dated to anything other than the

conventional date.

Regards,

John Steele

I would encourage you to use your God given brain and research the information outside the Watchtower publications.
