Guided by Holy Spirit or my own heart?

My wife left and divorced me unscripturally (saying I never loved you) and my repeated attempts at reconciliation have been futile (she says divorce is final and no reconciliation is going to happen).

So with that said, now that I am baptised and fully follow Christ to the best of my abilities, would he lead me into another marriage eventually or is it my own deceitful heart?

When I was married we both were sunday christians, we professed with our lips that we loved Christ but we didn't follow his teachings ever. When my wife divorced me I started to live for Christ and try to imitate him to the best as my ability (and get baptised). I now see peoples beauty for their spirits and not outter beauty, but I'm not really sure if that changes anything or not.

Scripture is pretty clear about this stuff but I do not have the gift of celibacy, and I do have self control as far as fornication, but not sinning against my own body. I just want a wife that has a good spirit that serves Christ and can read scripture and will pray with me. But, how do we know if God is leading us to someone or if its just our hearts?

I spoke with a pastor who told me this about the Holy Spirit in an email

"The context is Jesus' conversation with His apostles, in which He informs them of the role the Holy Spirit would have in their lives as His apostles. The Holy Spirit would guide them into all the truth (Jn 16:12-13), which He did, and they in turn wrote their gospels and epistles so that we might know what the Spirit revealed (e.g., Ep 3:3-5). When we read the writings of the apostles of Christ, then we are reading the words of the Spirit.

As for the revealing work of the Spirit, it was completed in the first century A.D., as indicated by Jude in his epistle (Jude 1:3), when he speaks of "the faith once delivered to the saints" (literally, delivered one time for all time). Thus we do not look for the Spirit to give modern revelation today. To know the will of God as revealed by the Spirit, we turn to the Word of God. It is complete and sufficient to instruct and guide us in doing the will of God (cf. 2Ti 3:16-17; 2Pe 1:3).

The Holy Spirit still has a role in the lives of Christians. Not in revealing truth, but empowering us to live according to that truth (cf. Ep 3:16,21), so that we may bear the fruit of the Spirit in our lives (Ga 5:22-23). He also intercedes for us in our prayers (Ro 8:26), so that we know God fully understands our deepest needs.

It is because many people incorrectly believe the Holy Spirit is speaking to us in ways other than through the Word that we have so much religious confusion today. Rather than letting the Word of God be our guide, people follow with they think is the leading of the Spirit, when in fact it is just their human feelings or consciences speaking"

Woah, dangerous, dangerous deception.

Jude 1:3 (NIV) Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.
v4 For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

Look at it in context. What is he actually talking about here? Saying that the Holy Spirit no longer leads us because we have the scriptures?

No. The Holy Spirit is our counselor. John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
John 16:7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

That was spoken to the church, not the apostles.

How can the Holy Spirit be our 'counselor' if he can't teach us anything?
That's ridiculous. If all we needed was the bible then the holy spirit is irrelevent. To say that he only 'empowers' us is unscriptural.

Rom 5:14
because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

Led meands led. Not empowered.

Why then do we need scripture at all? Because we need to test the spirits. The devil can appear as an angel of light. Both are valid ways of understanding God and his will for us. Both. Not one at the expense of the other.

But, how do we know if God is leading us to someone or if its just our hearts
That's why being baptized in the spirit is so important. Read about it. Look it up yourself. Why do you think God tells us to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. (phl 2:12)
Do you think that hopping aboard someone elses glory train is a guarantee of your salvation?
God doesn't say that.

I'm not trying to critisize here, but you can't entrust your salvation to be interpreted for you through other christians. It's idolatry. It's saying God can't save which is why I need to trust other people before him.

I'll pray for you. People get eaten by denominational interpretations of faith. God is God. No one else is, or can ever be.

PS. God is love. Why would he deny you another wife, if your desires are right?

You should check it up with him, not other christians first.

Hi Brother Broncos1982,
I speak blessing over you in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I'm sorry that you've had to go through divorce. It's a tough experience that can deeply affect lives. But I'm glad that you have decided to go all in and for live for Christ. He will be the anchor for your soul through this learning and growing process we all go through as Christians.

The title of your post is truely the "heart" of the matter for the answers you seek. Sister sharen has given you some sound councel.
Ask God yourself for the asnwers you seek.
I suggest that you Ask Him to reveal to you WHO the HOLY SPIRIT is not what. Once you have a better understanding of this I trust you will recieve revelation in this area of the continuing work of the HOLY SPIRIT. Amen

Thanks Sharen I really appreciate it. I knew in my heart that something wasn't right with that pastor. I knew the Holy Spirit was there to guide us, i'm not sure what he was talking about.

The only reason I was concerned about remarriage was because 4 months ago my wife divorced me because "she didn't love me" and so after exhausting all my attempts at keeping the marriage I finally signed the divorce. I have since tried reconciling twice, the first time she said no reconciliation and the divorce was final, and the second time ignored me all together. So that's why i'm stuck. I was baptized on sunday though, so some good news :P

my trouble is with this scripture "A woman must separate from her husband, But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife" But i accidentily divorced without knowing scriptures about all this stuff. Funny thing is my pastor wants me to lead our single mens group now.

You will note women who are divorced are expected not to re-marry because in the Old Testament and in the days of Jesus when they were still living under the Old Testament laws men could have more than one wife.

Not wise but completely legal under God's law. So a divorced man can take another wife without breaking the law.

Under Grace (which the new convenant that ame with Christ) you can get forgiveness for your divorce. There is nothing holding you back from finding another wife. We want to Live for the Lord as Saved Believers and not sin. Then do it right. Pray to the Lord about it and He will lead you and bless you.

It is good if you can remain celebate but if you can't then it is better to marry then to sin says the apostle Paul. Sex is where Satan can easily lead young men and women astray. Even young widows are encouraged to re-marry by Paul.

Remember your divorce is forgivable by the Lord. Treat it as a sin and ask for forgiveness and allow the Lord to sort it out in your heart before you approach marriage with another woman. You don't want to be in doubt or take it into another marriage.

" I do not have the gift of celibacy" oh so are you saying that means you have predetermined you will go out and sin?
it does not matter if you have that gift or not .
you better ask him for it NOW if you struggle, but from now on you better not go there.

because if you do that you will release death into your life. just don't go there. ask him for that gift and mean it. even if you don't get the "gift " you better mean it!

did you know if he has to wake you to judge you, death has already judged you and had it's way with you.
Honey just don't play with death.. because it may be fun for a few minutes ,but you wont like the consequences that death has in it .

I've already pled with God to give me the gift of celibacy. I have no received it. I'm not out having sex with anyone, but I am sinning against my own body. I can go much longer without it with Gods help but eventually it leads me back to sinning against my own body.

I can't imagine God setting me up for a failed marriage and then saying don't get married again and giving me a sex drive and then saying don't get married again and don't sin against your own body (masturbation)

I don't believe in this or that this is scriptural.. maybe cultural or maybe catholic or something .
I am sure you can't find any scriptures for this idea.

I believe our body has functions and it is our job to manage to the best of our ability all our body functions . controlling or managing them so that you do not sin/ or do those things which release death into your life.. like lust porn adulty etc.. these release death .. it is our job to manage ourselves .
in the same way you try very hard to not take a poop in someone front yard , you are managing your poop by going in your own potty.. It is wise to manange all our bodies functions.. instead it is not wise to control poop because if you deny you have to poop .
it will poop on you or someone else .

adam was told to manage the earth, to subdue it..
we are to manage our body, all it's functions , ear wax or boogers , your poop and your toots too. and never let it happen in someone elses yard ok!! and never look over the fence hoping to poop in someone else yard either, because that is a sin too ..alrighty!

lol, a lot on fecal matter :)

It still doesn't give insight to scripture though. The people who usually tell me about celibacy are the ones who are ALWAYS married :)

what and married folks don't go through times of celebacy, yeh right!
so you weren't married very long hum? and no kids? no hospital stays ? no long term sicknesses.. :shade: married life is just sex sex sex, right !,, wrong..

so You want scriptures on

Lust=Death, Adultry and Fornication = death?
sin = death there is tons of those old and new
or on masterbation?
because there is none on that subject.

But i accidentally divorced without knowing scriptures about all this stuff.

It’s certainly not an easy situation you’re in. Divorce never is – or I should say Christian divorce is never easy. Secular divorce can be legally straightforward these days, which isn’t a good thing really.

In a sense you divorced in spiritual ignorance (“accidentally”) and that situation was forced upon you by your wife’s cooling off. BUT, Christian marriage comes with considerable responsibility before God, and sadly that was something you and your wife didn’t manage properly right from the start.

(By the way, I’m not perfect myself! I’m just facing up to God’s biblical and spiritual requirements here for every married couple.)

So because you both didn’t take each step together with God and in Christ, it was always possible you and your wife would run into major difficulties. There’s no way we can say God sets us up to fail and fall.

It’s our fault for not acknowledging Him as we went along, and when we started out.

As is so often the case we stop and say, “Well, I messed up big time and now I’m suffering the consequences.” Does God care? Of course He does. He can lead us through those consequences, although we may well feel the cost of them for the rest of our days.

I’ve a page on my site on the subject of divorce – it may be helpful to you.

I've already pled with God to give me the gift of celibacy. I have not received it.

Celibacy isn’t a gift. It’s a choice. And to stay pure we need to walk through life really close to God, every step of the way. That’s what God calls us all to anyway. It’s a lifestyle that starts each day with our waking thoughts.

Being spiritually in tune with God’s will makes it very unlikely we will suffer major struggles with lust and all the sneaky temptations the enemy throws our way.

And believe me, one way or another, I know what I’m talking about.

Sam

Thanks for the reply sam. How long have you been married? Also I've tried reconciliation with my ex wife 3 times she said no 3 times and has had plenty of christain counsel regarding this. The youth pastor actually stopped talking to her completely. Also I've been told since she was married before it was adultery. She was married to a Christian who cheated on her three times (last time was a girlfriend on side) but repented and tried to get marriage counseling and she refused.

Paul stated celibacy is a gift and not everyone has it. And you're wrong about lust, everyone faces it quite a bit. Its a bit like saying everyone who is in tune with God will never get angry lol. Plus after she divorced me I had sex with a woman so in effect I broke the covenant technically without knowing it.

Since I was baptized Sunday I feel renewed in Christ and will be remarried someday. I will still see you in heaven lol. Just FYI, putting limits on the grace of the blood of Christ is not good.

Plus, how does one go about teaching grace, mercy, and forgiveness to everyone except those who've remarried. It's a bit rediculous.

Hello again. Thanks for the reply. I hope you’re keeping well.

I was married to my wife for 29 years. Sadly she died in 2008 from cancer (melanoma). Since then one way or another I’ve spent time with divorcees, getting to know them and learning something of the difficulties they’ve been through.

As a Christian widower divorce affects me directly if I decide to marry again. That’s why I studied the subject carefully and wrote about it. There’s a lot of confusion about it for sure.

Your problems now have their root in where you both went wrong back then. It’s not easy, but that’s where it all started for you both.

As for celibacy, to see it as a gift from God is to put the harmony of Scripture on marriage and relationships in something of a tangle. Honestly! God’s gifts are to the Church as a whole, so you’ll find them in local assemblies.

Abstaining from sexual relations is an option that’s part and parcel of serving God without distraction, IF that’s our choice and calling in Christ.

As Paul pointed out in 1st Corinthians: “But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk... And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction.”

Not getting sexually involved is a calling and a choice. The following quote is generally helpful:

...if we examine both the context and the implications of this idea, we will find that Paul was not speaking about celibacy at all. The idea that Paul was saying that celibacy is a gift is absurd for a couple of reasons.

First, he wished that "all" people were like he was with regard to whatever he was talking about. Do you think that Paul really wished that all people were celibate? Ridiculous! We know that Paul clearly understood that the gifts of the Spirit were many and diverse, and that their diversity was a strength. Paul celebrated the diversity of spiritual gifts (Romans 12:6; 1 Corinthians 12:1-12, 30). So, for him to want all Christians to have the same gift is ridiculous.

Secondly, Paul surely knew that if all Christians were celibate, they would die out. The Essenes believed that Paul wanted all Christians to be celibate, and they actually died out. Paul was not stupid. Celibacy is a strategy of death, not life. This all suggests that Paul was not speaking in this verse about celibacy as a gift of the Spirit. This misunderstanding has been read into the verse, not taken from it. Even more, it suggests that he was not talking about celibacy as a lifestyle at all. Why not?

We have already determined that Paul was trying to correct a Greek misunderstanding that lead to confusion about the nature of biblical sexuality, that the Bible taught neither that all sex was okay, nor that all sex was to be avoided. Rather, the Bible teaches covenant responsibility with regard to sex -- covenant responsibility, or marriage. And celibacy is an avoidance of covenantal responsibility in as much as it is an avoidance of marriage. But don't jump to the false conclusion that this means that unmarried people are unfaithful. It does not mean that. The point is simply that the whole idea that Paul was talking about celibacy is a Greek misunderstanding about what the Bible teaches.

So, what did Paul mean? Actually, his words are not perfectly clear. He assumed that his audience knew exactly what he meant, and it is likely that they did. The subject that Paul was talking about was assumed rather than stated. But it is nonsense to think that he wished that all Christians were celibate. It just doesn't fit with anything that Paul taught anywhere, and especially not here in First Corinthians.

Phillip Ross

Celibacy isn’t a gift at all. In fact it can’t be. Thinking that it is leads people to pray for it and then get annoyed with God when He doesn’t give it!

But God can’t give us anything that’s actually supposed to be the fruit of our relationship with Him. Do you see what I mean? Believing celibacy is a gift turns a lot of stuff on its head.

As for lust, yes you’re right inasmuch everyone faces it at some stage! I have too. But the point I was making was in another context. It’s to do with how effective our daily walk with God should be:

If we live our lives with God as we should it’s “UNLIKELY we will suffer MAJOR struggles with lust and all the sneaky temptations the enemy throws our way.”

There’s spiritual strength for every battle in Christ – we can indeed be more than overcomers day-to-day when we acknowledge Him in all our ways.

Best regards,

Sam

Thanks again for your reply. It's definitely thought provoking. To be honest, my divorce was the best thing to ever happen to me (and hardest) because I was not a follower of Christ (fake christian) and God used the divorce to reach me. I am truly sorry for your loss, I don't know what that is like, only what I have seen from what my mother goes through without my father (died from cancer too)

My thing with lust is that I have had a high sex drive since I was 6 (I was molested). Now I'm not saying "its not my fault" and I do take absolute full responsability (I have concluded masturbation is a sin since our bodies are our temples for the Holy Spirit). It's just that this is the one thing I have struggled with literally many times a day. After my divorce I decided to finally rely on God and believe me it has helped tremendously with self control, but somedays I just lose.

I'm not seeking a marriage for sex, but now that i'm an actual christian my tastes have changed in a spouse, its no longer who is great looking, it's who is spiritually mature, someone that I can read scriptures too and rely on in times when I faulter in my walk with Christ. I know we are to rely on Christ first and foremost, but as you know, there are reasons he made helpers for us.

You are absolutely correct when you say that Paul and Jesus were vehemently against divorce/remarriage because it causes so much pain to everyone and extended people that it consumes their time and they no longer focus on their duties as christians.

I have to give up the best relationship I have ever had after my divorce just recently because I have a new walk with God and I wanted to give God my full attention. It was by far the second hardest thing I have ever done because since I was young it was all I ever wanted, but honestly, it would have distracted me from my goal of serving. And now my pastor wants me to lead the single mens group. Its funny because I have always been a follower and that morning before he asked I had prayed that God would put me in a position to fulfill his will.

My thing is, you are absolutely right in the reasons for not getting a divorce and/or staying celibate. And you are right that God will be able to give us anything that we ask for, but sometimes he gives us different ways to honor him. The reason I started this topic in the first place was because of happenstance I just happened to meet a girl who was interested in me the day of my baptism, she is a christian, single, and a virgin (which is rare).

On a different note: The person I'm also trying to lead to the Lord is the same person who molested me. That person has changed almost completely since i've grown up and I am desparate to lead that person to the Lord. I love them with my whole heart, but what that person sees is my divorce and my struggles with the divorce/remarriage and I think it's off putting to that person. And that person has a lot of issues with the spouse and children and looks at mine as a christian marriage which failed.

and you did that as a 'Christian'?
you see the world and the enemy loves to twist up and confuse every matter.

a wedding is what is done before a judge or minister recognized by the state .It is what is done for civil legalities, when to two people who wish to have the state acknowledge their joint property as one unit .

the way God saw 'marriage' from it's inception ..it is what happens in the bedroom to two bodies, one male one female.. that become united and one in their flesh by that act and only by that act .
This is not a joke it is a reality!
that is a 'holy' thing , he does not undo it ..
that bonding is not undone except by someone dying or adultery then he will set the innocent part free of that bond.
so in the spirit you have since remarried and you are stuck till that woman commits adultery on you and He thus declares you are free.. or you or she dies.
or maybe you wedding her .
one thing if I were you I sure wouldn't press into to becoming a "minister" as that may push forward spiritually one of the later two options.
Dont' lead that class until he tells you with at least Two very clear very independent witnesses that you are free from that 'holy' bond.

and no one from this list counts either.
because I can guarantee more than a few 'love" bunnies are going to
declare you "free in the name of jesus".

but paul says clearly
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that commiteth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Paul is neither so bold or so ignorant as to suggest that it can be undone by anyone with a Quicky prayer .
God and his spirit in their correct timing/ because of the laws he set in motion concerning this subject at our creation ... the bible is clear state dont' eat meat to idols and don't do adultery and fornication/ sexual sins for a good reason.
no one quicky "jesus loves you" prayers undoes this stuff"
People just don't mock his creation, the very laws of creation.. his spiritual gift of unity and love and commitment between two souls , by trying to declare away that holy thing, that what is supposed to be a wonderful gift..

I beg you Bronco please don't minister in anyway either ok. because doing so demands a breaking of those bonds. do you want her to die for your sake or do you want to die?
You must serve God in other ways ,mop floors or whatever ,, but keep your mouth closed and pray and learn ...just don't teach any class till he clearly declares you free. free by many, by at least two unrelated , independent witnesses ok!

but by me .. knowing the gravity of this I wouldn't speak or teach till I had three of four independent witness, just incase I had deceived myself into believing something said was what I wanted to hear.. you know.. because I dont trust my flesh.. it will kill me if it can.. their flesh is killing lots of
"christians" everyday and they don't know it.
I would want more than two very direct to that subject 'words' or dreams etc "from the lord" and from two independent witnesses ( by two witness let something be established) it takes two witneses to establish a legal matter.. before I even sort of considered myself free to teach or even marry / wedding or bed kind.
Your in my prayers
and God bless your walk.

I'm not counting on her having sex with two people watching.

My first attempt at reconciliation she said no reconciliation divorce is final.

Second time she said Matthew 5:28 (whoever looks at someone lustfully has commited adultery). So I sent her a message back explaining what the verse really meant.

Third time (waiting, but probably she will ignore me.)

She has received MUCH christian counsel and have even stopped talking to her church friends. Isn't this like in Matthew 18 where it says rebuke the brother/sister and if they refuse to see their errors and repent then they shall be treated like an unbeliever.

Slow down

You have been divorced for four months only. I would suggest that now is not the time to be looking for a new wife. Get some balance first. I would be very surprised if you did not have a fair few hurts and issues to work through.

There is no rush.

Whatever God's purposes are for you in the future, they will become clear at the right time. For now, learn to trust in him and his provision for you day by day.

Your old souls mate is not the real issue.

Your new souls mate is HUGE issue. the enemy is a master at misdirection..
Along with the insanity that comes from being linked with that whoever it is .
Your body/flesh/ emotions are connected and bonded to them. it is/was a spiritually legal agreement act you did..you can not be free till He says so .
it is a spiritually legal binding thing you did..
by laws that were set in motion at creation BEFORE THE FALL!

Only by two independent witnesses of the lord's doing and in his timing , because of the legal requirements of that act and is it dissolve at his say , that is why we make him lord of our life. only at his say is something spiritually legally undone.

,you are linked by emotions and every other way to someone else .. who for all you know could be as mad as a hatter.
please just don't teach!
maybe you should fast and pray and bless her and bless her that she become a christian.. maybe then he will break her away from you for her sake, because he desires her a new/fresh start.
heck I don't know how it works or unworks exactly .. but I wait for his directions before I DO STUFF he says not to do too.. so I don't have to know every law.
