"Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness"(Eph. 4:21-24).

We know how crafty satan is and that he tries to deceive us in many ways. He tries to attract us by using the things of the earth. The world is filled with fornication, uncleanness, passions, evil desires and greediness. Greediness is covetousness. Man always wants to have more things for himself. Yes, we also once walked in these things, but now the Lord's precious blood has cleansed us. Now we have died together with Christ. If these things are still a problem to us, we must take up the cross and put them to death.

(Col. 3:7) says, "In which you also once walked, when you lived in these things." These things refer to our earthly nature in which we once walked. We must believe that the Lord Jesus has accomplished His work on earth and was crucified for us, and that all the earthly things in which we once walked were crucified with Him. Now, we should put our earthly members to death.

The practices of the old man are the works of our earthly members and the things of our fallen soul. We, who are the new man, must take care of these matters. If we want to live in the reality of the new man, we must seek the things which are above. We must set our mind in the heavens. Let us not think of earthly philosophy, empty deceit, traditions of men or the rudiments of the world. We must nail all this to the cross. We must put off the old man with all of his practices.

When we do not put off the old man, he causes us to sin. We do not always fall immediately, but we gradually begin to fall, just as Lot decided to dwell in the valleys of the Jordan and move his tents as far as Sodom (Gen. 13:10-12). A brother may occasionally fall into sin but this does not usually happen overnight. He begins to be loose little by little, going in the direction of sin. When he becomes aware of it, he is already in "Sodom." Lot is a good example of letting oneself be overcome by sin. Eventually he was completely corrupted. He went to live in Sodom, a place God had cursed. This is why we must always put off the old man and be renewed in the spirit of our mind, in our understanding. Why do undesirable things happen to us? They happen because we still live in the old man and the things of the old man are being corrupted.

As Christians, we should remember what manner of man we are.

''Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like'' (James 1:23-24).

    As Christians, we are:

Complete in Him "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority"(Col. 2:9-10).

Accepted in God's love for His Son "to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves" (Eph. 1:6).

Seated with Christ " But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus" (Eph. 2:4-7).

In Christ, an overcomer "Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God" (1 John 5:5).

A joint-heir with Christ "Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory" (Rom.8:17).

"Because as (Jesus) is, so are we in this world'' 1 John 4:17
