What does it mean to Work Out Your Salvation?

I think a lot of believers don't know what it means to work out your own salvation. Many, I've come to realize think this means that salvation comes by works and not of free gift of grace through Jesus Christ. So, let's study this. I found a great little bible study on this passage below.

    Finding God's Will

When you make a decision, how do you know you are choosing to do the right thing? In this message, Dr. Stanley explains why we have trouble discerning God’s will and how sin affects our ability to walk in the path He has chosen for us. He also encourages us to discover the Lord’s will through reading the Word of God, praying faithfully, trusting our heavenly Father’s sovereignty over our circumstances, and listening to the wise counsel of others.

How can I know when God is telling me to do something?

  1. Pray, especially when you’re unsure of God’s will for your life. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5). “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7). If you don’t know what to pray, you can always personalize & pray verses such as, “Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul” (Psalm 143:8) and, “Guide me in Your truth and teach me” (Psalm 25:5).

  2. How are we to submit to God?

In all the New Testament incidences where the word submit occurs, the word is translated from the Greek word hupotasso. The hupo means "under" and the tasso means "to arrange." This word and a root of it are also translated by the words subject and subjection. The word's full meaning is "to obey, put under, be subject to, submit oneself unto, put in subjection under or be under obedience or obedient to." The word was used as a military term meaning "to arrange troop divisions in a military fashion under the command of a leader." This word is a wonderful definition of what it means to "submit" to God. It means to arrange oneself under the command of divine viewpoint rather than to live according to one's old way of life based on a human viewpoint. It is a process surrendering our own will to that of our Father's.

  3. How do I get a passion for Jesus and keep that passion

It goes without saying that we cannot love someone we do not know. Get to know God and what He has done for you. Before the command to love God is given in Deuteronomy 6:5, the statement is made, “Hear O Israel, The LORD our God is one LORD.” One aspect of this statement is that He is unique, and the better we get to know what He is like, the easier it will be for us to love Him with our whole being. This also involves getting to know what He has done for us. Again, before the first command is given in Exodus 20:3, God states what He had done for Israel in bringing them out of slavery in Egypt. Likewise, in Romans 12:1-2, the command to offer our lives as living sacrifices is prefaced with the word therefore--a word meant to remind us of all of the mercies of God toward us recorded in the previous chapters.

  4. You'll know it's God, when you do something that makes you happy, and he was telling you this all along. :)

  5. I agree with you brother

If one is true to Him, they will know if they have made the right decision.
When the right decision is made, we feel a sense of pride, of joy. That is His presence over us

  6. Not necessarily, several characters in the bible namely jonas were instructed by God to do things they didnt want to do and were actually unhappy doing. This is where obedience comes in and true submission is seen. Are u going to follow?

I agree with Kobecriss. May I also add that one doesn't necessarily feel "a sense of pride, of joy." If anything, one feels a sense of awe, humility and gratitude that God gave them the courage and the wherewithal to obey His instruction AND Him....Like WOW, thank you Lord for enabling me to hear and obey You.

Besides, when God instructs you to do something, it's not always about you but it's always and forever about Him and His love towards every one of His creation. When you love God, everything in you wants to please Him, even when you don't feel like it or it hurts your flesh to do so. Hearing and then obeying Him by doing His bidding is one way to do that.
