Tithing, Money and the New Testament

People obviously gave money money to the Church during Jesus' time.

Mar 12:41 And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums.
Mar 12:42 A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent.
    Mar 12:43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;
Mar 12:44 for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on."

Luk 21:1 And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.
Luk 21:2 And He saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins.
    Luk 21:3 And He said, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them;
Luk 21:4 for they all out of their surplus put into the offering; but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on."

When we do give, we are not supposed to make a public display of it.
"Look everybody, at how much I gave!!"

Mat 6:3 "But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
Mat 6:4 so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
Mat 6:5 "When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

It appears that some, who had their material rewards here on Earth will not receive rewards in the after life.

Luk 16:22 "Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
Luk 16:23 "In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luk 16:24 "And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.'
Luk 16:25 "But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony.

Loving money is not really a good thing.

Luk 16:14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and were scoffing at Him.

Mat 19:23 And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 19:24 "Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

1Ti 6:9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction.
1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
1Ti 6:11 But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.

Tithing is mentioned in Hebrews 7. We see several times it mentions Abraham gave a tenth. It could be argued that it's talking about the old law here. My personal interpretation is that it is talking about the priests of the OT vs the priest of the NT (Jesus). My take is that we are still supposed to be supporting the church (of Jesus).

Heb 7:2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth part of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.
Heb 7:3 Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.
Heb 7:4 Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth of the choicest spoils.
Heb 7:5 And those indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest's office have commandment in the Law to collect a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these are descended from Abraham.
Heb 7:6 But the one whose genealogy is not traced from them collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed the one who had the promises.
Heb 7:7 But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.
Heb 7:8 In this case mortal men receive tithes, but in that case one receives them, of whom it is witnessed that he lives on.
Heb 7:9 And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes,
Heb 7:10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
Heb 7:11 Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron?
Heb 7:12 For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also.

Storing up money for ourselves will usually lead to trouble.

Mat 10:9 "Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts,

1 Tim 3:3 not addicted to wine or pugnacious, but gentle, peaceable, free from the love of money.

2 Tim 3:2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

Heb 13:5 Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, "I WILL NEVER DESERT YOU, NOR WILL I EVER FORSAKE YOU,"

Mat 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Mat 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

Luk 12:21 "So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Jas 5:3 Your gold and your silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and will consume your flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your treasure!

Let me jump back to the OT for a moment.

Mal 3:6 "For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
Mal 3:7 "From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you," says the LORD of hosts. "But you say, 'How shall we return?'
Mal 3:8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you say, 'How have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings.
Mal 3:9 "You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you!
Mal 3:10 "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this," says the LORD of hosts, "if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
Mal 3:11 "Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of the ground; nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes," says the LORD of hosts.

The book of Malachi was written about 400 years before Jesus came to the Earth. I have to say in my own life. The more I tithe, the more I am blessed by God. This is the only place in the Bible where God says "test me in this".

.. my 2 cents (excuse the pun).

    Not really..

    Jas 2:18
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

    Jas 2:22
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

    Psa 106:3
Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.

    Mat 5:5
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

    Mat 5:3
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

    How these related.

Jari, could you explain how those scriptures mean we are to Test God?

Only one place I know that says that.

Staying out of the rest, Jiggyfly should be here soon.......

they are all promises that God states to become true if we follow what was said.
By works faith increases.. because God is faithful like He was to abrahamn,
by meekness we inherit the land because God is faithful and by tithing we receive blessing because God is faithful.

when God says test me i think that means to test if God really is going to bless you if you do what He says.

    I understand.

Ok Jari I see what your saying.

God has never failed anyone that will believe his word over anything else. I guess in a way that is a test many fail in doubt and unbelief.

    Thank you for explaining that.
