    Dear JiggyFly.

By law I mean the written law handed down to Moses and the Israelites.

Was trying to figure out how to communicate what I've been trying to say without having to repeat scriptures which have been previously used by me or others. After praying and being unable to sleep, I felt compeled to write, and write some more. I wrote page after page when a picture of a chart/table came to to my mind. Scribbled it on a pad that I keep by my bed, and was finally able to get some sleep. Thanking the Trinity. My spirit and my body finally got some rest. Below is what was given to me to say. As always your brother in Christ.

    -------------God's Perfect Law-------------
    ---Non-Believer--------------Believer
    ----- Flesh-------------------Spirit
    --Condemnation-----------Accountability
    Restricts (Controls)-----------Frees

Yes indeed David there seems to be a lot of misunderstanding and confusion concerning the old and new covenants, law and Spirit.
This is exactly what Paul was dealing with in much of his ministry.

2Cor. 3:7-11 The old way, [fn] with laws etched in stone, led to death, though it began with such glory that the people of Israel could not bear to look at Moses' face. For his face shone with the glory of God, even though the brightness was already fading away shouldn't we expect far greater glory under the new way, now that the Holy Spirit is giving life? If the old way, which brings condemnation, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new way, which makes us right with God! In fact, that first glory was not glorious at all compared with the overwhelming glory of the new way. So if the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever!

Hebrews 10:1 The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship.............

Hebrews 10:7 Then I said, 'Look, I have come to do your will, O God— as is written about me in the Scriptures.'"...

Hebrews 10:9&10 Then he said, "Look, I have come to do your will." He cancels the first covenant in order to put the second into effect. For God's will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.

Hebrews is a good read and chapter 10 is very beneficial in correcting this confusion (kept in context of course).

Act 21:20And when they heard they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law: Act 21:21 And they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs. Act 21:22What is it therefore? the multitude must needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come. Act 21:23 Do therefore this that we say to thee: We have four men which have a vow on them; Act 21:24Them take, and purify thyself with them, and be at charges with them, that they may shave their heads: and all may know that those things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thyself also walkest orderly, and keepest the law. Act 21:25 As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication. Act 15:24 Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no commandment

LOL! Great Joy! Loved your question! For as much as the discussion has been about "Am I required to follow the Law?"
Below I've provided the Strong's Concordance definition of the most common usage of the word "Law" and an example in both the NT and OT. I pray this helps you out some! If not I pray that a more learned believer will contribute in assisting you and thereby me! Always learning, always growing! YBIC

8451 (Strong’s/Hebrew) OT mostly used in the old testament when law is talked about.
    1) law, direction, instruction
    a) instruction, direction (human or divine)
    1) body of prophetic teaching
    2) instruction in Messianic age
    3) body of priestly direction or instruction
    4) body of legal directives
    b) law
    1) law of the burnt offering
    2) of special law, codes of law
    c) custom, manner
    d) the Deuteronomic or Mosaic Law

Example: Ex 24:12 KJV And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.

3551 (Strong’s/Greek) NT mostly used in the new testament when law is talked about.
    1) anything established, anything received by usage, a custom, a law, a command
    a) of any law whatsoever
    1) a law or rule producing a state approved of God
    a) by the observance of which is approved of God
    2) a precept or injunction
    3) the rule of action prescribed by reason
    b) of the Mosaic law, and referring, acc. to the context. either to the volume of the law or to its contents
    c) the Christian religion: the law demanding faith, the moral instruction given by Christ, esp. the precept concerning love
    d) the name of the more important part (the Pentateuch), is put for the entire collection of the sacred books of the OT

Example: Gal 4:5 KJV To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

The Mosaic law was for Israel.Gentiles in the old testament were under the Noachide Laws:
    #1 no Idolatry
    #2 no murder
    #3 no theft
    #4 no sexual immorality
    #5 no blasphemy
#6 no eating flesh taken from an animal while it is still alive
    #7 establish court of law

According to Judaism, any non-Jew who lives according to these laws is regarded as a Righteous Gentile, and is assured of a place in the world to come.

A christian should operate out of love not formulas.
    Non sin Example:
Proverbs 26:4. Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.
Proverbs 26:5. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

These verses seem a contradiction but they define a situational awareness that requires spiritual discernment.
Judge not lest you be judged.
Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
Sometimes listening to the Holy Spirit is a recipe for disaster in our eyes. How many well meaning friends told Hosea that marrying a prostitute was a very bad idea. How many Spirit filled Christians warned Paul that if he went to Jerusalem he would end up arrested. He was listening to the same Spirit but his situational awareness of the message was that love demanded he be there.

GODs law actually is quite simple to follow if the persone doing so is truely HIS.
and that is keeping GODs commandments
this is explained best how to be done in the gospels of
    matthew 27
    mark 12
    and luke 10
to love the lord your god with all your heart all your soul all your mind and all your strength, and to love your neighbour as yourself
    this is the law
for a believer its easy to kep the first 4 of the 10 commandments they naturally love GOD . but more ofyen they fall with some of the last 6 but this is also easy because jesus tells us in john how that is done
    john 13
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

anything beyond that is a religious practice/sacrifice and all the new testiment teaching deals with that .
