    Is it okay to want to be fit and look good?

    Sometimes I have a hard time keeping a balance about things, especially thoughts about my weight. For instance, when I first met Jim, (my loving husband; we were married on March 28, 2004)---I asked him if he thought I should lose weight. At that time, I weighed about 125 and was somewhere between a size 8 and a size 10. He said, sort of distractedly, "Oh, I guess you could stand to lose ten pounds."
    Well, it turned out I really fell for Jim. And, yeah, he fell for me too. We didn't live in the same town, so could only see each other for dates on weekends and talked on the phone every day. And I began dieting rigorously. Running was something I did alot as a teenager and younger adult, so I started running miles at a time, eating very small portions of fruit and vegetable soup---and within a month I had lost 20 pounds and gone down to a size 4. Sometimes the size 4's were too big and I had to get a 3. I am small-boned and 5'2".
    Well, we got married, and he started to watch what I was eating. "You are not eating enough," he'd say. He'd come home from work and ask my daughter what and how much I ate that day. I heard them talking once and heard my daughter say that my ribs were sticking out and she was worried about me. (She was only 11 at the time.)
    I could not understand what they were talking about. I looked in the mirror, and to me, I could still stand to lose at least 5 more pounds, if not more.
    After awhile, I started to concentrate on just keeping in good physical shape. Jim and I ran together 3 or 4 times a week, and I did aerobics and floor exercises at home occasionally. The weight stayed off, I didn't even have to work at it. Wonderful, and I felt so healthy. We ate healthy, and I learned to not undereat---or overeat.
    Eight months after we were married, Jim was deployed to Iraq with the Army National Guard. Two weeks after he left for Fort Sil, I discovered I was pregnant, at age 44! This was a real blessing, and quite a shock. I was attending the University of Tenn. full time, majoring in education. LOL, it was at the clinic at the college where they did the pregnancy test. LOL, the nurses were so glad I was happy to be pregnant. Most of the clinic patients at the college are not at all thrilled to hear of their pregnancy, unfortunately.
    Then to tell Jim. That was the fun part. Except, he was real, real busy and kept not calling me day after day! Finally, I called one of the other wives and told her, "When your husband calls you today, tell him to tell Jim to call his wife!" He called. I said, "Are you sitting down?" (Jim is 10 years older than me and has a 35 yr. old daughter and a 28 year old son, praise God.)
    He was very, very happy and me too, but to make a long story short and to keep to this subject of physical fitness....while I was getting very, very happy, I was also becoming very, very fat! Do you know I gained 45 pounds during my pregnancy? Ouch!
    My little guy is 5 months old now. And the scales just won't move. I stay right at 130 no matter what I do. I've been training for a 5 K, in fact it is this Saturday morning at the YMCA. I will be excited just to finish it. But I can't help but wonder how many other women in the age 40 - 49 bracket are going to run???? Oh, well, at least I know I'll get a t-shirt, because I registered early. I will let you guys know if I win a medal!
    Jim says he doesn't care if I'm fat! In other words, he's coming home to me whether I'm fat or not, lol! He's gained weight this year, too, he has said.
    He said we can run and jump rope and work out together. Besides, he loves to cook homemade soup and that will help me keep my weight down.
    I miss...being slim. I liked feeling good...and looking good. Is that wrong?

    Today was the 5k run. I placed 4th in my age group for women, so I didn't get a prize. I was disappointed, but then....I have only been training for this run for 1 month. Maybe next year.

    Anyway, I'm on my way to getting back in shape after having the baby, so I praise God for good health and the fun I've had getting ready for the race. Some men and boys that were running BEHIND me placed!!!!!! No fair. I had some stiff competition with some good women runners.

    I'm pouting just like a little kid. This is ridiculous. Maybe there's another 5k somewhere else in a few weeks?????

    Hello sister GOd bless you :)

    I think its great that you and your husband exercise together and care for good health. GOD tells us to treat our bodies properly as they are our holy temples GOD has given to us.

    1 Corinthians 6:19
    Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

    I work out (weightlift) daily, usually 5 days a week. Its a great feeling. Eating healthy (not over eating, junk food, or even under eating) is important. Maybe if it would help you, find a nutritionist. My mom did it, cousin is doing it and they are a great help. Doesn't hurt at all to learn from them who study nutritional matters.

    So it is okay to care about health and fitness, as long as we keep it in balance. Sometimes I need to be reminded about that balance part!

    ...i think moderate exercise is fine as long as it doesn't interfere with your spiritual life

    Hello, no, it's absolutely okay IMO, our bodies are the temple of the Spirit, it's good for our witness, and being a good role model. I heard Kenneth Copeland mention fitness, and he said, don't do it for vain reasons, or it doesn't work, he said "Love self disciplines" let your motivation be example: being a good role model for your children (if you have any) or inspiring your husband and others in your sphere of influence, to shine for Jesus in that way. I don't think there's nothing wrong with that, what you expressed. I agree, I used to run, and I miss it, it makes you feel good, spiritually, mentally, physically... and there's another Scripture about running a race to win...     I used to run alot, I do more weights now and I think exercise is fine aslong as you don't start to 'worship yourself' so to speak, it should be for your well being and not start to constantly dominate your thoughts, I suppose it is the same with alot of things.

    Hello, hormones. I was always the "great body" in the group, and very athletic, in my teens, twenties, thirties... then came my mid-forties and boy. Not only does the hormone change make you a bit tired but, the weight just STICKS. It's very frustrating, because it seems no matter what you do it doesn't move. NOW... I've finally got it going but it's taken a lot of extra steps, the first being water. A lot of it. That's a part of why it's there, is water retention, and the smart thing to do is to flush out the body. There's a lot of other things I'm doing but I'm starting to carve down from the "wedding weight" - I got married around the same time as you did, but am a few years older. :love: Congratulations, by the way, sweetie! :love: Your little one sounds like he's very loved and well-taken care of. It warms my heart to see great mothers like you who are concerned about nutrition. And wanting to be *pleasing to your husband* just makes you more of a Proverbs 31 Woman in my eyes, because I don't think you want to look attractive merely for your own vanity. I don't buy that at all. God bless you abundantly, Dreamer!

    I like to jog and keep in shape too but there has to be a balance in all things as others have said. It seems that you used to think that if I was like this shape I would be loved more which is sadly what anorexics and bulemics seem to say. When God's Spirit reigns in you, one of His fruits is a peace that passes understanding.

    The key is that God loves everyone just as they are and to Him you are beautiful as you are made in His image.

    Also, some people cannot exercise. Does that mean they are less at peace with God? Of course not. The bottom line is whether you are at peace with yourself and with God :)

    i second the comment on our bodies being the temple of the Holy Spirit. You want to keep it in shape physically and spiritually.
