How to become RIGHTEOUS?

"I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless" [Genesis 17:1]

It is every believer's desire to beocme righteous and we all strive for it. But what is righteousness and how do we get it? How do we walk before God and be blameless?

There are two types of righteousness mentioned in the Bible.

  1. Believing in God and His Words
  2. By doing acts of righteousness

The first type is mentioned in the Book of Genesis 15:6 "Abram believed the LORD, and He credited it to him as righteousness". This is the first time the word righteousness is used in the Bible and also God mentioned how to achieve it.

We must therefore believe in what God said because "The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life" [John 6:63]

The first type of righteousness is achieved by believing in God's word and how do we achieve it is by reading, understanding and believing whatever God said in the Bible is true and all His promises for us are true. Once we believe in God and His words, God credits it to us as an act of righteousness. "In Him (Jesus) all the promises of God are yes" [2 Corinthians 1:20]

As believers in God the Father through our Lord Jesus, we must believe in God's word because it gives us life, "The words that I (Jesus) speak to you are spirit, and they are life" [John 6:63]

Now the second type of righteousness is something gained by doing. The second type of righteousness bings us into the Grace of God. However, we must always remember that the Garce of God is no license to sin rather it stops us to live in our sinful life.

"For the Grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say NO to ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age" [Titus 2:11-14]

Paul explains it in more depth when he wrote a letter to Phillipians, "Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. Whatever you have heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you" [Phillipians 4:8-9]

Getting into second type of righteousness is a continuous process. Talking of my personal life, all these years, I have been constatnly trying and sometime, I overcome sin and yet at some point of my life I need God's help to overcome sin. Therefore, while trying to achieve righteousness one may fall many times but then it is God's promise to us that He will never abandon us and He will always be there to help us, guide us and protect us. "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying 'This is the way, walk in it. Whenever you turn to the right or whenever you turn to the left'" [Isaiah 30:21]

We need to be very vigilant while achieving the second type of righteousness and pray continuously to God to strengthen us because "Satan might not outwit us. For we are not aware of his schemes" [2 Corinthians 2:11]

We must read Bible (Old and New Testaments both), understand it and apply it to our lives because "We must pay more attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away" [Hebrews 2:11]

"Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you - guard it with the help of Holy Spirit who lives in us" [2 Timothy 1:14]

The best way to put it is that we are all in a race, in this race we do not want to come second but rather we want victory in this race. Everyone runs in this race yet only one gets victory over others. We must see to it that we do not train less rather we should give everything in preparation of this race in order to win. We must, "Watch your life and doctrine. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers" [1 Timothy 5:22]

Therefore we need to achieve both types of righteousness. First we have to believe in God and His words, then we have to apply God's words in our lives in order to walk before God and be blameless. We cannot become blameless in front of God without applying His word in our lives. We need to plant His word as a seed in our lives, we must take care of that seed and let the gardner (Jesus) prune and shape it to His own desire.

If we do not change, then there are few things that God cannot do:

1. He cannot live with a wicked
2. God does not live with an arrogant
3. God does not love people who do wrong
4. God does not bless liars with prosperity
5. God does not love murderers and deceitful people

We must reflect on our lives on daily basis and try to change where we go wrong seeking forgiveness and help from God, "In your anger do not sin; when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent" [Psalms 4:4]

You are wrong with this statement. God is love. God loves all unconditionally. Nothing we do will make Him love us more and nothing we do will make Him love us any less.

He loves the person but hates the sin.

Thank you for replying and thank you for taking out time to read the article. You are right in saying that I am wrong but I do believe that what the Bible says is true and binding.

You are not God who takes pleasure in evil;
with you wicked cannot dwell.
The arrogant cannot stand in your presence;
You HATE all who do wrong
You destroy those who tell lies;
bloodthristy and deceitful men the LORD abhors [Psalm 5:4-6]

I think the beauty of God's personality is that when we read Bible, it clearly separates God from the rest of earthly gods. As a student of religions, I came to notice the difference between our God the Father and other earthly gods. To begin with, I write one example that is quoted by Jesus Himself, "Infact a time is coming when anyone who KILLS you will think he is offering a service to God" [John 16:2]. Nor put this verse in comparison to "bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors" [Psalm 5:6]

You can see around that what Jesus said about people killing us (Christians) as a service to God is infact in action.

I can give you scores of proofs ans references from other scriptures (not Christian) where other earthly gods attract followers with sexual pleasures and other evil incentives. But our God the Father never does that.

In my humble opinion, there is a condition to God's love and that is "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever BELIEVES in Him shall not persih but have eternal life" [John 3:16]

The condition for getting under God's love is believing in Jesus. The same condition is also told by Jesus Himself, "Whoever BELIEVES in the Son has eternal life, but, whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him" [John 3:35]

So I humbly request that there is a condition to God's love and this is what I wrote in my article and this is the first type of righteousness (believing in God's word).

After believing when we start using God's word in our personal lives and we start saying NO to evil and evil cannot deceive us too because God in His love gives us strength to overcome sin. In His love, mercy and kindness, Jesus gave us authority "I have given you authority to trample snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the ENEMY" [Luke 10:19]

This is not true! The bible says NOTHING can separate us from the love of God! "nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

God loves everyone! No matter what! His grace shows that! Even Jesus Christ shows that! Once we repent we have been washed an our sin is thrown into the sea of forgetfulness! God blesses liars and murderers every day with new life and new mercies! He puts breath in their bodies! Life is a blessing! So it is not right to say that God does not bless liars or Love murderers his love proves to be there every day when we wake up! And because Jesus gave us new life we are not killed because of our sin! You sin everyday because you are flesh but because of Jesus Christ dying on the cross for us we are not killed because of our sin. Gods love is shown through his son Jesus EVERYDAY. So like I said before NOTHING CAN EVER SEPERATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD! That is a lie from the pits of hell! Gods mercy is proof of his love Gods grace is proof of his love and Ultimately Gods Son is proof of his love. Everything else that you said about righteousness was on point but those last few things were wrong. He may hate what we do but he always loves us.

And also human logic and spirtual life do not go together so you can give references all day but unless you get supernatural understanding from God (which is accessible) you can't try to aply human logic to spiritual things. The spirtual realm has more wisdom beyond what the human mind can comprehend it surpasses what we think. Although the mind is amazing it has no where near the intelligence of the supernatural.

It's really much easier to become righteous than many believe. You see, the Word says we already are the righteousness of God..

Romans 5:18-19 (CJB)
18 In other words, just as it was through one offense that all people came under condemnation, so also it is through one righteous act that all people come to be considered righteous. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man, many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the other man, many will be made righteous.

2 Corinthians 5:20-21 (KJV)
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Now what you posted comes into play...We live by faith and that is righteous. We live in obedience to our Father and that is righteous. We walk in righteousness. But to try to become righteous is like telling God that what our Jesus did for us on the cross is worthless.

But when that bloody and deceitful man repents and comes to God he is accepted.
John 3:16 (KJV)
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Can you tell me who is left out of 'whosoever'?

Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

God might hate the things people do, but he still loves them, and if not, no body could ever be saved.
