can't let go of the past...

I didn't have the best childhood, and I have always
had trouble with letting go of it all. The memories of
the bad experiences are so vivid, it was like they all happened
yesterday...I don't know how to shake off these nitemares and
discouraging thoughts, and though I have prayed,
I feel so down and pulled to the ground from these memories.
I could be a much happier person if I didn't so much of my past...

The path to healing is fond in forgiveness. Unless we by the Holy Spirit choose to enter into forgiveness as commanded by the Lord we can find ourselves really bound up, wounded and even carrying a root of bitterness.
Get alone by yourself asking the Holy Spirit to bring all in remembrance and pray through this.
    I have never known anyone who has done this that did not experience a tremendous sense of freedom;

First starting with your earliest childhood memories think of each person in your life. Remember that we can only do one of two things at a given time, submit our hearts to God or submit our hearts to the god of this world.

Go over every detail you can remember and for each person pray this:
Father in Jesus Name I choose to forgive ____, if they knew your love they could have not acted like that. I can see now that they were responding out of a wounded heart and that they were in bondage and darkness. I now pray the blessing of salvation over ____ and I release them into Your hands.

Do this for each and every person in your life until yo have come up to the present. That leaves you one last person to pray for: Father in Jesus Name I forgive myself for _______. I now realize that it is impossible for me to lead a godly life without You. I now know that You see something precious in me and You sent Your Son to pay a terrible price for me. I accept Your forgiveness and inner healing.
thank You Jesus for setting me free!

Psa 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.

Here is something that might help...

Try one of these or all of them...

Write the bad memories on a piece of paper. Say a meaningful prayer about not letting it overtake your future. Then, as you rip the paper in pieces say something like "In the name of Jesus I rip this paper up to symbolize the breaking off of its hold (or bond) on me!"

I used to have nightmares, too. I'd be SO scared of even walking on the street alone at any time. :-S So, I would pray the whole time I walked anywhere. Also, I would pray before I went to bed and say this "In the name of Jesus this bed I sleep on is holy ground and no demon or evil can come near it. No weapon formed against me shall prosper."

Once I figured that I needed to let go of my past to go forward into my future, it was hard, but I have forgiven those who have hurt me. I have no more nightmares about my past.

I laid all of my bad memories at the feet of Jesus and I told him that I would try to not take them back with his help.

You and I can't do this alone, but with GOD all things are possible.

Start speaking good into your life. "I am nightmare free." "My future is before me and my past is behind me."

    Hi danni!

Remember, the enemy is very slick and sneaky and you can find yourself thinking thoughts he's whispered to you. I see by your last post that you've found peace with this? Praise the Lord for that! May the Lord continue to hold you close and keep you safe!
God's opinion is the only one that really matters.

    danni,

Jesus said that He came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. john 10:10

Don't let the accuser of the brethren get to you. He comes to kill and to destroy our joy. Rebuke him and he will flee.

Often forgiving ourselves is the hardest thing to do but if a perfect loving Savior could forgive us who are we not to forgive ourselves?

    Danni,

I am going to step out there and share something personal with you that will testify of God's love and peace and a fine definition of forgiveness.

I was raped when I was 4 months pregnant years and years ago. I had nightmares for a couple years nearly every single night. Immediately I became recluse and a mute. I didn't talk much at all to people because I lived in fear and shock.

Then God presented His Son and I accepted.

After 2 years of getting a bit better in social settings, I still was VERY careful and avoided talking to any males. The nightmares were still there though. I prayed and prayed and prayed for God to deliver me from these nightmares and the fear that still was in my life every time I was around any male person.

Then I heard a message on forgiveness and the power of it. I then began praying that God would help me forgive my biological dad for ditching us as kids and then playing severe mind games with us growing up. That's what I thought I needed in my life, but it was very clear in my mind that God wanted me to forgive the man that raped me.
At first avoided the thought, but it kept coming back into my mind and wouldn't go away. It wasn't too long after that God revealed to me that even though what the man had done to me was wrong, sinful, hurtful -any word you can describe the action, but that Jesus died on the Cross for exactly what that man did. That the cross was also offered to this man as well.

When I forgave him, the nightmares stopped. Very simple. Very to the point. No question in my mind that God was speaking to me about forgiveness.

Remember that once you forgive, there is always a test to follow.

A couple years later, God put it on my heart to move back 7 miles from where this guy raped me.

At first I said No way Jose`!!

I even bargained with God. I told him that if it WAS Him speaking to me, that it was God that put it on my heart, that I would open the bible, read the first story I came across and that would be my answer.

Much to my chargrin, I opened directly to Matthew Chapter 2.

You can read it for yourself and will find that Joseph was told my an Angel of the Lord to take Mary and Jesus to escape King Herod's killing of every child.
Further in scripture, The Angel of the Lord told Joseph when to go back.

The point of all that was to say that I left that town to get away once the courts found the guy not guilty after the long ordeal of a mistrial and then with proof he had previous convictions in another state, they let him go because he lacked an education and I was the "new girl" in town. (I didn't have any evidence of integrity so to speak)

So when God spoke to me to move back, I was scared, but it was a true test of my faith.

I also believe that God tells us to act in wisdom. We did a public search for this man in that town, and he was no where to be found. The mother of his child even said she didn't know where he disappeared to.

Needless to say, God had my back. I lived there for 8 years before I moved again.

Remember that forgiveness is the giving up the right to punish someone of their wrong doing.

God says in his word that He's got our back on this one!
    Trust Him!!
A Woman should be so lost in God that it takes man to seek HIM to find her...
