    Receiving the Holy Spirit

    Dear All

    How is everyone

    I want to chat about the Holy Spirit today and something that I am a little confused over.

    John 14:15-18 (King James Version)
    King James Version (KJV)
    Public Domain

    15If ye love me, keep my commandments.

    16And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

    17Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

    18I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

    Would I be right in saying that the verse is saying if you keep the commandments God will send you the Holy Spirit, does this mean that unless you are the perfect Christian and always keep the commandments you will not receive the Holy Spirit? I dont think so as I have always belived that Salvation is by faith and not works, but that faith produces Good works. I have also been told/ belive that you receive the Holy Spirit as soon as you place your faith In Jesus – Is this right? I take it by “ comforter “ this means the Holy Spirit?

    Any thoughts would be great especially on the part about when we, as belivers, receive the Holy Spirit

    Thanks for any help

    God Bless

    David

    the receiving of the holy spirit is between you and god. if you read through acts some people receieved the holy spirit after repentance and some did not receive the holy spirit until after they were baptised in water. however i can tell you and promise you, you will know when you receive the holy spirit.

    Thanks, but how do you know for sure? I mean I have faith no doubt about it, and i belive the Spirit convicts me of sin, so I guess i must have the Holy Spirit, my works are getting better day by day etc. Not only this but God is at the forefront of my thoughts - always

    When you are born again the Holy Spirit comes to live in you. He is our comforter, guide, helper.

    1 Corinthians 3:16, we see that the Holy Spirit lives inside us: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

    There are some threads on Holy Spirit and here is one:

    Faith & the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit

    Here is another one for you which explains that we all have the Holy Spirit but not all are filled with the Holy Spirit.

    In John ch 7 v 37 "In the last great day of the Feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, ' If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: ........."

    Can you imagine the scene. After all the ritual, all the sacrifice, all the blood shedding, all the ceremony.......(All necessary at that time) Jesus stood and cried "If any man thirst"..........this spake he of the Holy Spirit.

    Are you thirsty? Reading the thread I see that you are.

    "I will pour water on him that is thirsty, I will pour floods upon the dry ground" said the Prophet. Open your heart for the gift I am bringing........whilst you are seeking me I will be found.

    We all are thirsty. I am still thirsty after a lifetime of drinking....... of the Holy Spirit.

    Reading what has been said....it is all good. But I would counsel that if you want to know this satisfaction, this bible promise, this paraclete, this comforter of which Jesus spoke. Simply trust Him....Jesus John Baptist said "I baptise with water, but one cometh after me whose shoes I am not worthy to untie. When He gets here He shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost"

    Trust Him as you pray......Fellowship with other Christians who have received this blessing.......They will be able to pray for you, and help you
    Jesus said "I am the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE"......Without the WAY there is no GOING, without the TRUTH there is no KNOWING without the LIFE there is no LIVING....Thats what Jesus said.

    Thankyou for your reply. Your right i need to simply trust - have faith and all will fall into place. thankyou

    I would like to also put across this verse

    John 16
    1I HAVE told you all these things, so that you should not be offended (taken unawares and falter, or be caused to stumble and fall away). [I told you to keep you from being scandalized and repelled.]
    2They will put you out of (expel you from) the synagogues; but an hour is coming when whoever kills you will think and claim that he has offered service to God.

    3And they will do this because they have not known the Father or Me.

    4But I have told you these things now, so that when they occur you will remember that I told you of them. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

    5But now I am going to Him Who sent Me, yet none of you asks Me, Where are You going?

    6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts [taken complete possession of them].

    7However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

    8And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment:

    9About sin, because they do not believe in Me [trust in, rely on, and adhere to Me];

    10About righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God), because I go to My Father, and you will see Me no longer;

    11About judgment, because the ruler (evil genius, prince) of this world [Satan] is judged and condemned and sentence already is passed upon him.

    12I have still many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them or to take them upon you or to grasp them now.

    13But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message [on His own authority]; but He will tell whatever He hears [from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him], and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come [that will happen in the future].

    14He will honor and glorify Me, because He will take of (receive, draw upon) what is Mine and will reveal (declare, disclose, transmit) it to you.

    15Everything that the Father has is Mine. That is what I meant when I said that He [the Spirit] will take the things that are Mine and will reveal (declare, disclose, transmit) it to you.

    I belive this tells us that if the spirit is leading you in the truth, it will convict and convince you of this truth, which will at first lead to repentance by succesfully convicting about sin and convicting succesfully about rightouness and about judgement. then no beliver has anything to worry about as when i say succesfully i mean this in that you will have repented, and belive. Therefore the spirit must be working in/around us in the way that it was intended and we are responding in the right way. I dont belive the spirit would be convicting us succesfully without our own trust and faith - back to your point there stephen,

    any thoughts on that? also i think that the verse from 1 cor 12: 3 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking under the power and influence of the [Holy] Spirit of God can [ever] say, Jesus be cursed! And no one can [really] say, Jesus is [my] Lord, except by and under the power and influence of the Holy Spirit.

    points to this too.

    would i be right in my thinking? Can i just say these forums have helped me so much, sometimes it is just best to think simply and as you guys have said, trust and belive

    39But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the [Holy] Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).

    Amen

    Hi Slim.
    The title of your thread was 'Receiving the Holy Spirit'

    My previous post related to the original thread. I answered with scripture, and personal experience. Have you read the scripture I gave you? Do you understand the point I tried to make? "If any man thirst........etc" Are you aware that God Almighty can meet with you....In the Holy Spirit

    I humbly suggest that you read my post again.

    Trust His word....and receive.
    Jesus said "I am the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE"......Without the WAY there is no GOING, without the TRUTH there is no KNOWING without the LIFE there is no LIVING....Thats what Jesus said.

    Hi Stephen

    Thanks for your reply i really appreciate it

    I am sorry for misunderstanding you

    I am struggling i think to understand what you mean. I have read the scripture you gave me, and the way I understood it was that if any man thirst - which as you have said i am ( and i am! ) then he will recieve the spirit and then the spirit will flow from him ( Rivers of living water will flow from the heart of anyone who believes in me ) I think the rivers of living water are the spirit flowing from the beliver, which the beliver has got by trusting and beliving in Jesus Christ - therfore reciving the holy spirit. are the rivers also referiing to your works that will be apparant becasue of the spirit in you?

    im really sorry if ive misundersttod again, would you be able to explain for me?

    37Now on the final and most important day of the Feast, Jesus stood, and He cried in a loud voice, If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink!

    38He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water.

    39But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the [Holy] Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).

    I am misinterpritng something here, Am i right in thinking the Holy spirit is recieved by those who have trusted and have faith in Jesus? looking at the scripture i think so but im missing a point somewhere. Although my post above about John 16 was out of context would anyone be able to give me their view on my view on that as well? I have to go to bed now as I have work tommorow ( unsual for a Sunday ). I just like to know im on the right track with my thinking

    any help would be so appreciated

    God Bless

    David

    ps - could i also ask that the comforter in john 16:7 is the Holy Spirit? im still very new in a lot of my understang of the bible and i really need some help here

    John 14. explains this for you.

    26But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.

    John 16. Amp.

    9About sin, because they do not believe in Me [trust in, rely on, and adhere to Me];

    10About righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God), because I go to My Father, and you will see Me no longer;

    NKJV John 16.

    The Work of the Holy Spirit

    5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
    12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you
