    Jesus & Original Sin

If Jesus is God in flesh, why did He not inherit original sin?

If all people have original sin and Jesus was a human being, then didn't Jesus need to have had a sin nature?

Before we can answer this question, we need to know what the term "original sin" means. This is a term used to describe the effect of Adam's sin on his descendants (Rom. 5:12-32). Specifically, it is our inheritance of a sinful nature from Adam. The sinful nature originated with Adam and is passed down from parent to child. We are by nature children of wrath (Eph. 3:2). So, if we inherit our sinful nature from our parents, then Jesus, who had Mary as a parent, must have had a sin nature. Right? Not necessarily. I believe that the sin nature is passed down through the father. Let me explain.

Some Bible commentators, with whom I agree, hold the position that the sin nature is passed down through the father. Support for this position is found in the fact that sin entered the world through Adam, not Eve. Remember, Eve was the one who sinned first. However, sin did not enter the world through her. It entered through Adam. Rom. 5:12 says, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned."

The concept behind this is called Federal Headship. This means that a person (a father) represents his descendants. We see this concept taught in Heb. 7:9-10, "And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, 10for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him." We see in Hebrews that Levi, a distant descendant of Abraham, is said to have paid tithes to Melchizedek when Abraham was the one offering the tithes, not Levi.

What this means is that there is biblical support for the idea that the sin nature was passed down through the father. Since Jesus had no literal, biological father, the sin nature was not passed down to Him. However, since He had a human mother, he was fully human but without original sin. Jesus has two natures: God and man. Col. 2:9 says, "For in Him dwells all the fullness of deity in bodily form." Jesus received His human nature from Mary, but He received His divine nature through God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, Jesus is both God and man. He was sinless, had no original sin, and was both fully God and fully man.

    Dear Chad,
Many years in reading the Bible and reading the scripture that said,
“Jesus sin not” I took it as face value. It never came to my mind with
the question you quoted, “If Jesus is God in flesh, why did He not inherit
    original sin?”

But now days with so much deceit and false prophets people need to know the truth, nothing seems to be at face value anymore because of the way the world is now.
As Christians we need to know how to give a reasonable answers to those who are seeking Christ and help them find the truth without doubts.

This is an outstanding post and thank you for sharing it.

    Sister in Christ, Trish

2 Corinthians 5 : 21 "For he hath made him to be sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteous of God in him"

    He knew no sin

It is sufficient for me to know, and to believe beyond so much as a shadow of doubt that scripture teaches that the LOrd Jesus Christ was without sin. God did a new thing in the earth when Jesus was born. Jesus did not lay in Adam when Adam sinned. He did not lay in the loins of Adam when Adam fell. Therefore no guilt from Adam or distance from God, can ever be associated with Jesus. "That holy thing which shall be born of thee" was neither shapen in sin nor born in iniquity

    He knew no sin.

Of course Jesus knew what sin was. But with sin he had no communion, no fellowship no brotherhood. He was a perfect stranger in the presence of sin. "He knew no sin". He was not an inhabitant of that land where sin is acknowledged. Yes he knew the haunts of sin, he passed its domicile but there was no communion. He knew not the language of sin though he understood it completely

Had Jesus sin of his own he could never have taken away our sin. All that he could suffer, all that he could endure, would already be due to his own personal account. But Hallelujah "He knew no sin"

We can rejoice brothers and sisters, that we have such a substitute, one who is fit and able and proper, to take away our sin and to suffer in our stead

    As the old hymn says
There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin
He only could unlock the gate of heaven and let us in

To Him be all the glory for ever and ever and ever

    Amen Amen

Jesus said "I am the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE"......Without the WAY there is no GOING, without the TRUTH there is no KNOWING without the LIFE there is no LIVING....Thats what Jesus said.
