Quote:
Sin in the life of the church grieves the person of the Holy Spirit and quenches His power. If sin remains unchecked by the loving application of church discipline in a body of believers, the Holy Spirit must abandon such a church to its own carnal resources. The unavoidable result will be the loss of the Lord’s blessing until the sin is dealt with.
The defeat of Israel because of the sin of Achan illustrates the principle.

I highlighted the remark above, because this is the whole point of the matter. I think sadly that the people of God are too oft more concerned about charity than we are about the gospel truth, (either one without the other is a lie) and more concerned with keeping the fellowship, than we are in whether God is pleased with our fellowship. How we pride ourselves in our ability to disregard sin, so that we might embrace, and be embraced by the one who knows to do right, but chooses to do wrong. Oft times I think we forget WHO is the point of the whole matter.
In John 7:7, Jesus says to his own brothers: "The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.
Joh 16:8 And when he [the Holy Spirit] comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:

Gal 1:10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? I
f I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

1Co 5:2
How, then, can you be proud? On the contrary, you should be filled with sadness, and the man who has done such a thing should be expelled from your fellowship.

2Co 7:8 For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it--though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while.
2Co 7:9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us.
2Co 7:10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

Eph 4:17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the heathen do, in the futility of their minds.
Eph 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.
Eph 4:19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
Eph 4:20
But that is not the way you learned Christ!--
Eph 4:21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,
Eph 4:22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,
Eph 4:23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,
Eph 4:24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Eph 4:25
Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.
Eph 4:26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Eph 4:27 and give no opportunity to the devil.
Eph 4:28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
Eph 4:29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.
Eph 4:30
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
