I grew up on rock/metal music and will always prefer that style of music. Now that I've been a Christian since 2004 there are some bands/lyrics that I just turn off because of the bad message/lyrics. That's the guidance from the Holy Spirit and it goes across the whole spectrum of modern media.
One thing I think that's just as important as the musical lyrics is who is the artist and what causes are they supporting with their millions of dollars. There are some music artists who may not have objectionable lyrics but are involved in new age religions or other activities that are contrary to Christian values and should not be supported with our dollars.
There is no such thing as a right or wrong style of music. It's all about the message in the lyrics and the values of the person making the songs. My pastor had a good comment about music in church once. He said contrary to some peoples beliefs there has been music written since the 1800's and it can be played on instruments other than the organ.
